EXTENSION-TABLE.

mechanism being releasable for permitting the sections to be adjusted.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the table top;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig.
- 1, looking in the direction of the arrows ad jacent to the line;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the locklng mechanism for the top;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fi 5, and
igs. 5 and. 6 are sections on the lines 5-5 and 6-6 respectively of Fig. 3, Figs. 4, 5, and 6 looking in the direction of the arrows adjacent to the respective lines.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a table consisting of a pedestal 1 and a sectional top, the top being composed of similar sections 2. The sections of the table are connected to each other and to the pedestal by the usual interengaging slides 3 and the plates 4, and the sections are moved toward and from each other by rack bars 5 and 6. Each of these rack bars 5 is secured to the under side of the table top section as indicated at 7 and 8 respectively, and the said rack bars are arranged upon opposite sides of a pinion 9 which is journaled on a screw bolt 10 on a plate 11 secured to the upper face of plate 4 before mentioned.
The pinion is arranged between the plate 11 and a guide plate 12 which is secured to the plate 11 by the screw bolt 10, and the rack bars 5 and 6 extend through the guide or guard plate 12.
At the outer edge of each of the rack bars a pin 13 is arranged, the said pin holding the rack bars in engagement with the pinion, and the said pins extend from the plate 11 upwardly through the openings in the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ea. a, 1917.
plate 121 A look plate 14 is mounted to slide transversely of the rack bars at one side of the plate 11, the said lock plate havmg at one end a slot 15 whichfengages a pin 16 on the plate 11 and having at the other end an angular slot 1718 which engages a pin 19 on the plate 11. This lock plate is provided with rack teeth 20 for engaging the pinion 9 to prevent rotation thereof and to lock the rack bars 5 and 6 and to hold thesections of the table top from movement in either direction. That portion ofuth e plate 14 between the rack teeth 20 and that end of the plate, adjacent to the slot 17- 18 is cut away so that it will not interfere with the rotation of the pinion, .and the pinion may rotate freely until the teeth 20 engage the same.
The arrangement of the portion 17 of the slot 17-48 and of the slot 15 permits the lock plate to move far enough transversely of the rac'k'bars in either direction to cause the teeth 20 to engage with the pinion or to release the said teeth from the pinion. The
plate 14 is operated by means of a lever or handle 21, the said lever or handle being pivoted to the pin 19 and having a pivotal connection 22 with the plate.
The portions 1718 of the slot 17-18 are at right angles to each other and at their junction a recess or depression 23 is provided for receiving the pin 19 and for permitting the plate to be moved laterally at the end adjacent to the slot 1718.
In operation when the parts are in the position of Fig. 3, the rack bars 5 and 6 are locked from movement in either direction,
and the table top sections are firmly held in whatever position they may occupy. When it is desired to extend the table from the postion of Fig. l, the lever or handle 21 is moved in the direction of the arrow in the said figure. The sliding connection 22 between the handle 21 and the plate 14 moves in the portion 18 of the slot, to the position of Fig. 4, as the handle is swung and the plate 14 is moved to the right of Fig. 3 into the position of Fig. 4, disengaging the rack teeth 20 from the rack teeth of the pinion 9.
Vhen it is desired to lock the sections in adjustment, the handle 21 is swung from the position of Fig. 4 to that of Fig. 3. The
first movement of the lever or handle 21 causes the plate 14 to move transversely of the rack bars, the pin 19 moving into the portion 17 of the slot and the slidlng connection between the lever and the.
the plate 14 hasieached the end of its movement to the left, the sliding connection 22 isin alinementwith the outer Wall of the portion 17 of the slot, and a slight further movement of the lever causes the sliding connection to enter the portion 23 of the slot to lock the locking plate in locked position, against the possibility of accidental displacement. The lever 21 must be moved in the direction of the arrow adjacent thereto in Fig. 3 before the sliding connection 22 Will release from the notch or recess 23 to permit the lever 21 to move the plate 14.
I claim: r
l. The combination with an extensible table, comprising asuitable support, and table top sections mounted to move toward and from each other on the support, oppositely arranged rack bars secured to thesections, the support having a guide-through Which the rack bars are movable, and a pinion journal'ed between the rack bars in the guide and engaging the same, means 'for locking the pinion against rotation, said means comprislng a plate movable trans-' versely of the rack bars, and having teeth for engaging the pinion to prevent rotation Gopies of this patent may be obtained for thereof, the plate having slots and the support having pins for engaging the slots, one of the slots havin an angular portion, a lever pivoted to the adjacent pin and having means for slidably engaging the slot,
said slot having at the junction of the por tions thereof a recess or depression for receiving the slidable engaging means of the lever, to lock the plate from longitudinal movement with the teeth'thereof in engagement With the pinion.
' 2. The combination with an extensible table, of oppositely arranged rack bars connected with the sections of the table, a pinion engaging the bars for constraining the sections to move together in opposite directions, and means for locking the1pinion from movement, said means comprising a plate moving transversely of the rack bars and having teeth forengaging the pinion, the plate having slots, and the table having pins for engaging the slots, a lever pivoted to one of the pins and having means for slidably engagin the adjacent slot, said slot having at the junction of the portions thereof a recess for receiving the slida-ble engaging means of the lever to lock the plate.
