DUMr-wAGom-k Application filed February 8,1916. SerialNo. 76,979.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat we, GILBERT C. Hooo is anCl'VvILLIAM, M. .LoHNEs, citizens of the United States, residing at Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented new and. useful Improvements in Dump-Wagons, of which the following is a specification. 3'
This invention relates todump wagonsof that class which are providedwith hinged bottom doors in contradistinction to that type of dump wagons from which the load is discharged by tilting the body of the wagon. I j
Manufacturers and users of dump bottom wagons have been confronted'with a difiiculty resulting from the insufiicient clearance between the doors and the surface of the ground when the doors are in dumping position, such clearance, in standard. wagons, rarely exceeding twelve inches. The result has been that when the load is dumped it would obstruct thejdoors, thereby obstructing the free movement of thewagon either in turning or in advancing, and also obviously obstructing the closing of the doors until'the wagon would be moved to a distance from the heap or pile formedby the load'just deposited on the ground. The wrenching and straining caused bythe effort to move the wagon would also obviously be detrimental to the 'wagon structure and would operate to shorten the life thereof.
The present invention has for its prime object to produce a bottomv dump wagon in which the doors will be capable of moving to such a position as to produce an ample clearance when the load is discharged.
A further object of the invention is to produce means whereby the doors after swinging open will be moved to a non-obstructing position with respect to the load just deposited on the ground.
A further object of the invention is to produce means for moving the doors to a non-obstructing position which will not interfere with the arrangement and operation of the means customarily employed for open- 1119; and closing the doors.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the use, in a device of the class described, of springs whereby the doors after being permitted to swing open will be moved to a clearing position without special efiort an the part of the operator.

I With. these and fotherends in view which will readilyappear as the nature of the insists in the novel const,ru ction, arrangement and combination'oif parts. which will be here inafter fully described and: particularly pointed out in the claims. V
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein. exhibited,
but that changes, alterations'and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired. i
- In the drawings, v

1 Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference. The invention-has been shown appliedto an ordinary dump wagon of which Adesig; nates the body, B and C, the rear and front axles',-respectively, D, the neck,fE, the seat, and F,the doors which are adaptedjto be operated by chains G connected with or 2 is a side elevation ofthe same.
tensioned to open and-close the doors.
Under the present invention the doors are provided with straps 15 having terminal ,ventionis better understood, .the same conloops 16 engaging vertically disposed guide rods 17 which are fixed externally on the side walls of the wagon box, said guide rods being substantially vertical and parallel to each other. The loops 16 are adjacent to the outer side edges of the bottom side mem bers, and they cooperate with the guide j rods 17 to form hinges that will permit the doors to swing beneath the wagon box when said doors are positioned with the loops 16 adjacentto the lower ends of the guide rods. Pulleys 18 are journaled near the upper ends of the respective guide rods 17 .on shafts 18' which extend in engagement with the guide rods 17, the pulleys 18 being disposed intermediate the said guide rods and a wagon body Flexible elements such as chains 19 are connected with some of the loops 16, said chains being guided on the pulleys 18 and joined together so as to form atgeach side of the wagon body a single pulling chain 20.
At each side of the wagon, near the front end thereof, is mounted a strong coiled spring 22 with which the pulling chain 20 at the corresponding side of the wagon is connected. Each of said springs is also connected by a chain, 23 with a Winding drun121 on which the said chains 23 are adapted to be wound. Fulcrumed on the winding drum is hand lever 241 having a pawl25' engaging a'ratchet wheel 26 on the winding drum, said ratchet wheel being also engaged by a dog27 whereby it maybe locked against reverserotation.
hen the doors'ai e closed, the springs 22 will be tensioned and the chains 23 will be wound on the drum shaft 21. When the doors are'permitted to swing to aload discharging position, and the drum shaft 21 is released, it will be rotated by'the contractile actionof the springs 22, thereby unwinding the chains 23, the chains 2O being at the same time pulled or tensioned by the action of the springs sufliciently to lift the doors bodilyto the position shown'in Fig. 2. By properly proportioning the parts the doors may beelevated until they are clear of the bottom edges of the side walls ofthe Wagon boX, thereby providing for the maximum amount of clearance The eXtentto which the doorsmay be lifted may, however, be varied. rotating the drum shaft 21 by means of the hand lever 24: the springs 22 may be tensioned, and the doors Will be gravitationally lowered until they may be swung to their usual closed position by the means provided for the purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A wagon body, vertical guide rods secured on the outer faces of the side members thereof, guide pulleys positioned intermediate the rods and the wagon body, door members having straps provided with terminal loops engaging the guide rods, and
" chains connected with the loops guided over the pulleys and joined together to form at each side of the wagonbody a single pulling chain, in combination with springs with which said pulling chains are connected to bodily lift the door members adjacent to' the outer faces of the sides of the wagon body.
2. A wagon body, vertical guide rods'secured on the outer faces of the side members thereof, guidepulleys positioned intermediate the ro'ds and the Wagon body, door members having straps provided with terminal loops engaging the guide rods, and chains connected with" the loops guidedover the pulleys and joined together'to form at each side of the wagon body a single pulling chain, in combination with springs with which said pulling chains are connected to bodily lift the door members adjacent to the outerfaces of thesides of the wagon body, and'a winding drum, means for rotating the same, and chains connecting said drum with the springs for the purpose of tensioning the same.
In'testimony'whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of twowitnesses.
