Description

(No Model.)
L. RODENHAUSEN.
.DUMPING WAGON.
No. 332,109. Patented Deb. 8, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT Erica.
LEONHARD RODENHAUSEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DU'MPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,109, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed September 14, 1885. Serial No. 177,083. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONIIARD RODENHAU- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumping-WVagonawhich improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-- Figures 1 and 2 represent partial side elevations and partial vertical sections of a dumping-wagon embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents an end view of a portion thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in constructing a dumping-wagon, whereby it may be dumped over a cross-spring.
It also consists of a brace for the rear axle.
It also consists of a self-opening tail board or gate.
It further consists of a novel lock or fastening for the tail-gate.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the running-gear-of a dumping-wagon, and B the body thereof.
0 represents the reach or top board or. part of the running-gear, to the rear of which the body B is pivoted by means of slotted straps D, the slots whereof extend vertically, and have passed through them the bolts E, which are secured to the reach and serve to connect the body with the running-gear. Depending from the body, and firmly secured thereto, are brackets F, to whose lower ends are attached cords or chains G, which are adapted to be wound around a shaft, H, the latter being mounted on the reach and carrying a gearwheel,J,meshing with which is a pinion, which is mounted on the reach and provided with a suitable crank-handle,whereby the shaft may be rotated, so as to wind the chains G thereon, the effect whereof is to raise the front part of the body for dumping purposes, as illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be seen that when the body is raised the portion adjacent to the rear end of the reach turns on said end, which, as will be seen, is rounded, but, if desired, may be made angular or sloping, the body being re tained on the running-gear by means of the straps D, bolts E, and the brackets, chains, and shaft. It will also be seen that the wagon has a cross-spring, L, which, secured to the reach and rear axle, occupies a position at or near the rear end of the reach, and thus the body may be dumped without interfering with. or being interfered by said spring.
In order to brace the rear axle and cause it to resist strain in front or rear directions, I employ braces M, which are of segmental form and pivoted to the brackets N, which are secured to the reach, and to clips P, secured to the axle, so that while the reach may rise and fall with the rear spring the braces provide strong connections for the axle with the reach and serve to hold the axle against forward or rearward motions, due to any strain that may be imparted to the running gear from the weight of the body or to the wheels when striking a curb or obstructions in the street or road.
Q represents the tail board or gate of the body, the same being formed of upper and lower sections, the lower section having journals, which are hung on slotted straps It, secured to the body, the upper section being fitted in and retained by said straps, and the lower section adapted to move rearward, thus opening the body and permitting the contents thereof to be discharged.
In order to lock the lower section, I provide jointed or toggle levers S, which are pivoted to the tail-gate, and have pivoted to their ends bolts T, which are guided on the tail-gate and adapted to enter keepers U on the body. One end of the lever is extended, forming a handle convenient of access at the side of the body, so that by operating the le ver the bolts may be moved in and out of the keeper, so as to lock and unlock the tail-gate.
The entire gate may be readily removed from the body by unlocking the lowersection and lifting the two sections from the strap B. When the gate is in locked position and the body is operated to dump the load, the lever is moved so as to shoot the bolts from the keeper, and the lower section opens by gravity or automatically, and thus the load may run out at the bottom of the body without liability to escape over the top of the gate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dumping-wagon, the body B, having the bracket F secured thereto, in combination with the chain G and gearing J H K, the said gearing having bearings secured to the reach 0, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-wagon, the segmental brace M, in combination with bracket N and clip 1, said bracket being secured to the reach of the wagon, and the said clip secured to the axle thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A dumping-wagon having a body provided with means, substantially as described, for tilting said body, across-spring, L, beneath the rear part of the reach 0, brace M, bracket N, and clip 1?, said parts being arranged and combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
