CHAPLE'I.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Oct. 2 1917..
Application filed October 14, 1916. Serial No. 125,585.
of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chaplets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to supports or chaplets for holding'and supporting the internal mold or core in place when it is desired to produce a hollow casting.
The objects of this invention are to produce chaplets of this character which are simple and inexpensive to make while having a maximum amount of strength, and having a construction which permits of the free escape of gases from its interior so as to prevent the formation of cavities in the finished casting.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views; Figure 1 is a sectional view of my chaplet 011 the line A-A of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a back ele vation, Fig. 3 a side elevation and Fig. 4 a front elevation of my chaplet; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line AA of Fig. 3 and showing a slightly different sectional shape from that in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a sheet metal blank from which my improved chaplet is constructed. Figs. 1 to 1 show another form of chaplet embodying my invention, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line A A of Fig. 3 Fig. 2 is a back elevation, Fig. 3 is a side elevation andFig. 4 a front elevation of the same and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a sheet metal blank from which this second form of chaplet is constructed.
The chaplet constructed from the blank form shown in Fig. 6 is first out through on the lines 16, 17 and 18. The parts 1 and 2 forming the top and bottom respectively are then bent over on the dotted lines 19 and 20 (Fig. 6) in the same direction and at right angles to the parts 8, 8 which form the connecting uprights between the edges of 1 and 2 as shown in Fig. 3. The wings 3 and 4 are then bent in on the dotted lines 21 and 22 (Fig. 6) with radii 5 and 6 to a position leaving an opening 7 as in Fig. 1, or on the radii 10 and 11 and leaving an opening 9 as in Fig. 5.
The chaplet having been formed as described is then tinned or otherwise plated as I is the usual practice and is then ready for use.
In my form of chaplet the top 1 and bot-- tom 2 are supported in a very rigid manner by the wings 3 and at and any gas which may form on one side cannot be pocketed as it can readily escape to the other side through the opening 7. In Fig. 5 this opening is represented by 9 and is a somewhat larger opening than 7 in Fig. 1, as the wings 3 and 4 are bent on radii 10 and 11. This leaves smaller pocket spaces 12 and 13 than the spaces 14 and 15 in Fig. 1 and also brings the supporting wings 3 and 4 nearer the side edges.
In my form of chaplet shown in Figs. 1 2 3 4 and 5 the blank form in 5 has the holes 5, 6 and 7 a stamped out and it is cut through at 16 and 17. The portion 8 is then pressed in to the form shown in Fig. 1 which makes a continuous supporting surface 3 and I for the top 1 and bottom 2*, which are then bent over on the dotted lines 19 and 20 (Fig. 5 in the same direction and at right angles to the part 8 which forms the connecting upright or back as shown in Fig. 3 In this construction the holes 5, 6 and 7 in the top, bottom and upright respectively allow the escape of gas so it cannot be pocketed.
It is understood that the construction of my chaplet may be modified in various ways without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
1. A chaplet formed of a single piece of material and consisting of a top, a bottom and connecting upright at the back edges of said top and bottom, said upright being continuous with said top and bottom at one corner and having a portion extending between said top and bottom at an angle with said corner portion to form a support.
2. A chaplet formed of a single piece of material and consisting of a top, a bottom and connecting uprights at the back edges of said top and bottom, said uprights being continuous with said top and bottom at the outer corners and having portions extending between said top and bottom at an obtuse angle with said corner portions to form supports and a gas passage between them.
3. In a chaplet formed of a single piece of material of uniform thickness, a top, a.
4. In a chaplet formed of a single pieceof material of uniform thickness, a top, a bottom and aconnecting upright at right angles to said top and bottom, said upright having a central vertical opening extend- 10 ing from said top to saidbottom to form a gas passage through said chaplt and the sides of said upright forming supports.
' lntestimony wliereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
