Application filed September 23, 1916. Serial No. 121,736.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Cnnis C. RUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display racks and its object is to provide an improved device of this nature constructed in such manner as to adapt it to display rugs.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a rack of the character above described adapted to support a pile of rugs in such position as to display them to the best advantage and also to support them in such manner that any individual rug may be withdrawn from the pile without disturbing any of the other rugs of the pile.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display rack constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring to the drawing it will be seen that my improved rack comprises a vertical frame indicated in a general way at A and a horizontal frame indicated in a general way at B. The vertical frame A comprises four corner posts 5, 6, 7 and 8 suitably tied together by transverse bars 9, 10 and 11, a cap plate 12 and bars 13 and 14. The horizontal frame comprises longitudinally extending members 15, 16, 17 and 18, vertical corner posts 19 and 20 and transverse bars 21, 22 and 23. Hinged at the front edge of the cap plate 12 by hinges 24 is a rectangular frame 25 which carries at its free end a handle 26. A swinging rack bar 27 is pivoted to a bracket 28 which depends from the under side of the frame 25 and this rack bar engages the upper edge of a plate 29 that is carried by the bar 23. A

wire 30 passes through any suitable keeper such as a staple 31 that is carried by the bar 21 and one end of this wire is connected to the free end of the rack bar 27 and the opposite end of this wire is provided with a ring 32 which constitutes a handle. Vhen the wire is drawn upon to release the rack bar from the plate 29, the frame 25 will descend until its free end rests upon bar 21 but if the frame be raised to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 the rack bar will serve to maintain the frame 25 in such position. Extending between the bars 13 and 14 and the longitudinally extending frame memhere 17 and 18 respectively, are guide rods passing through slots 34 formed in a cross bar 35. This cross-bar carries clamp rods 36 that are threaded for the reception of nuts 37 and 38, said nuts serving to rigidly connect the clamp rods with the cross-bar 35. The upper ends of the clamp rods 36 are shaped to form yokes 39 adapted to receive a clamp bar 4-0, said yokes carrying set screws 41 for securing the clamp bar against displacement therefrom. The upper portions of the clamp rods 36 are slidably disposed in sleeves 37' that are provided with wings 38' which span slots 39 formed in the cap plate 12. This structure permits a limited adjustment of the clamp rods forwardly and rearwardly to secure the desired alinement of the several parts. The guide rods 33 are likewise adjustable forwardly and rearwardly of the machine through the medium of bolts 42 and 43 adjustable in slots 44 and 45 of the members 15, 16, 17 and 18, respectively.

a bolt 47 carried by the vertical corner post 8. (See Fig. 5.) This bolt passes through a slot 49 formed in the corner post 8 and carries a nut 50, the tightening of which serves to adjust the bolt 47 vertically in the slot 49 and a nut 51 is threaded upon a reduced portion of the bolt 47 and holds the handle 46 in position. An intermediate portion of the handle 46 is pivotally connected at 52 to the cross-bar 35 and a spring 53 has one of its ends connected to said handle and its other end connected at 54 to a part of the vertical frame. The upper edge of the operating handle is bent rearwardly at 55 to engage in the teeth 56 of a rack plate 57 that is secured to the corner post 6. If the operating handle be pressed downwardly at its free end against the tension of spring 53, the portion 55 thereof will ride over the rack teeth 56 and the cross-bar 85. .willbe drawn downwardly carrying with it the clamp rods 36 and clamp bar 40 to therebyclamp upon the cap plate 12 one end of'a' pile of rugs -58.- Inplacing the pile'of rugs" in position the frame 25 is moved to the po sition illustrated in Fig. 2 and is held there by the rackbar 27. Having described my invention what I claimis A device of thecharacter' described, comprising a vertical frame, a cap plate carried thereby, a frame, one end of which is hinged at the edge of said cap plate, clamprods passing through the cap plate, a clamp bar carried by the clamp rods, a cross-bar to which the clamp rods are connected, guide rods operating in slotted portions of the cross-bar, an operating handle, means for adjustably and pivotally connecting the op eratinghandle to the vertical frame, means for pivotally handle to the cross-bar at a point intermedi ate the ends of-theoperating handle, a rack carried by the vertical frame with which the operating handle co-acts and a spring normally tendingto impart vertical movement to the operating handle.
