HUMIDIFIEE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Application filed May 9, 1917. Serial No. 167,434.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALDEN MITCHELL ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Humidifiers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to humidifiers and more particularly to that class of such devices adapted to be used in conjunction with a box of cigars, cigarettes, or smoking tobacco, in order to impart the necessary moisture thereto and prevent the drying out thereof.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall be adapted to fit the interior of a cigar or cigarette box and to be placed in such position therein as to cause the open ends of the cigars or cigarettes to be in contact with the humidifying device in order that the moisture is transmitted to the cigars or cigarettes at a point were it will have easy access to the interior thereof, thus preventing the unnecessary wetting of the wrapper end, and in the case of cigars, also preventing uneven moistening, due to the act that in ordinary devices of this character as now used the moisture must penetrate the wrapper in order to reach the filler.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will from time to time hereinafter appear, this invention consists in the peculiar combination and arrangement of the various parts of a humidifier as set forth in the following specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral indicates the same part wherever used,
Figure 1 is a transverse section through a box of cigars showing the device in position;
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective showing the pasts of the humidifier in separated relation an Fig. 3 is a plan view of the envelop forming blank.
4 designates a box of any suitable construction and illustrated in Fig. 1 as being filled with cigars 5 packed in the usual manner. A blank comprising a body portion 6, side flaps 7 and 8 and end flaps 9 and 10, is folded to form an envelop as shown in Fig. 2, the fla 7 being folded over the portion 6 and the aps 9 and 10 folded inwardly over the portion 7, as shown. The blank is preferably made from araffin or waxed paper and is fastened 1n envelop form by heating the flaps to cause them to adhere. A base or water-absorbing member 11, preferably out from blotting paper, to fit the envelop formed by the blanks as above described, is moistened and then inserted therein, the member 6 being provided with a plurality of perforations 12 to permit the ends of the cigars 5 to receive the moisture from the member 11 through the member 6 with which they are in contact. The flap 8 is turned .down to form a complete envelop to entirely inclose the member 11 with the exception of the portions thereof which are exposed through the perforations 12.
By this construction it will be seen that a very compact humidifying device for tobacco is provided, which is efficient and extremely economical to manufacture, and convenient of application.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the I specific form shown and described.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a humidifying device for tobacco 2 memes flexible Waterproof material having a per- In testimony whereof I affix my signature forated face and side and end flaps and in presence of two Witnesses. adapted to be folded on itself to form an envelop to contain a moisture carrying pad, ALDEN MITCHELL ALEXANDER 5 the Whole being capable of being readily Witnesses:
