WILLIAM ROBERTS BERRY, or AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
COMBINED MATCH HOLDER AND CIGARETTE CONTAINER Application illed February 27, 1924. Serial No. 695,508.
To all whom t may concer/n.:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM ROBERTS DERBY, a citizen of the United States, and a lresident of Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Match Holders and Cigarette Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This. invention relates to a combined match .holder and cigarette container and is especially. adapted for embodiment in the conventional form of cigarette packets.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of vthis character which insures a supply of matches to the smoker and at the same time prevents the matches from impairingthe vflavor ofthe tobacco or otherwise affecting the same, the match holding means being so organized with the cigarette packet as to effect these purposes and yet leave the structure of the packet unimpaired andunaltered thereby enabling the user to extract cigarettes and to handle the packet in the usual manner.
A further. object is to provide a device of this character and l having the foregoing enumerated advantages and capacities and which is also ofv simple and durable construction, reliable and safe in use and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention, parts being broken away for the sake of' illustration;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but Showing the slidingtray for the cigarette packet extended or drawn out from the outer container;
Figure 3 is a View in section on line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the sliding tray of the cigarette packet withc the match holding means aiixed thereto;
of paper or paste-board and is of rectangu- .lar form. A sliding tray 11 is fitted in the outer container 10 and as usual includes a back wall 12, side walls 13 and flaps 14 and 15 providing end walls and a front wall but enabling the cigarettes to be removed or eX- tracted as may be desired.
The matches provided are designated generally at 16 and include stems 17 having heads 17 applied thereon and of suit-able composition. Anl attaching plate 18 is integrally formed with the stems 17. The stems 17 and plate 18 may be made of paper, paste-board or the like so as to provide a fiat thin structure adapted to lie flush up against the back of the tray and to be accommodated between the back of the tray and the container 10 when the tray is inserted in the container. The attaching plate 18 is pasted or secured by a suitable adhesive to the back 13 of the tray but the stems 17 of the matches are 'free with respect to the tray and may be readily torn from the attaching plate 18. The stems 17 are of course impregnated with inammable substance so as to be susceptible of being readily ignited. A protective and enclosing cover, designated generally at 20 is provided for the matches and entirely encloses the stems 17 and heads 17a of the matches but does not enclose the plate 18. This covering consists of paper waxed, oiled or otherwise treated to render it impervious to moisture and to'render it capable of insulating the matches to such an extent as to prevent the VSubstances contained therein from penetrating into the cigarettes contained in the tray and impairing their quality or otherwise affecting the same. Preferably this .covering is constructed from a blank similar to that shown in Figure 5 and including a back wall 21 and a front wall 22 foldable over in front of the back wall. Side flaps 23 are provided and are preferably integral with the back wall. The side flaps 23 are folded over the front wall after the same have been positioned and are then pasted to the portions of the front wall which they overlap. The side flaps 23 have extensions 24 which are pasted or otherwise suitably secured to the attaching plate 18, and the lower end 25 and front wall 22 are also pasted or suitably secured to this plate 18. A rip strin 26 is provided for severing the front wal from the back wall to permit of ready access to the matches when it is desired to use the same.
A match strike 28 is the outer container 10.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 6 a different type of cigarette packet is shown and is designated at 30. This is a well known type of packet and access is had thereto from the upper end designated at 31. To the rear wall of the packet 3Q a match holder, designated generally at 32 is provided. This match holder consists of an attaching plate 33 having integrally formed with each endv thereof stems 34 of the matches. Match heads 35 are applied to the stems in the usual manner. derstoodA that the stems 34 and plate 33-.are
preferably applied to formed of paper but that the stems `34 are` impregnated with a substance to make them susceptible of ready ignition. The outer face of the plate 33 has a match strike 36 applied thereto. A protective covering of transparent and wax paper, designated at.
37 isl provided for the matches at each end of the paper 33. Each covering 37 is similar in construction to the covering 20 herein above described, and rip strings 38 are provided in conjunction with each coverlng. In this form of the invention however not onlyfis the plate 33 pasted or otherwise suitably secured to the packet but the inner or back walls of the coverings 37 are also pasted to the packet.
In both embodiments of the invention a. supply of matches is also at hand whenever the cigarettes are available, and this oonvenience and advantage is had Without impairing the quality or avor of the cigarettes or otherwise affecting the same a-nd Without interfering with the facility with which the ci arettes may be extracted or the packet handIed'in other respects.
I claim: f
1. In combination with a cigarette packet, a match holder comprising an attaching plate having stems integrally' formed therewith, said match stems having heads applied thereto, the attaching plate Abeing asted to the packet. and a covering for t e match stems and heads thereof, said covering completely surrounding the ,match stems and It is to be un-.
rettes, a match holder inclu ing heads and consisting of paper treated so as to be impervious to moisture and so as to insulate the matches and the heads thereof from the the cigarettes to prevent the substances of the matches from penetrating to the cigarettes and impairing the flavor or quality or otherwise affecting the same.
2. In combination with a packet of cigarettes, matches secured thereto, and a covering for the matches completely surroundin the matches and consisting of paper treat with wax, oil or the like so as to render it impervious to moisture and also to render it capable of so insulating the matches to prevent the substances thereof from penetrating to the cigarettes and impairing the flavor and quality thereof or otherwise affecting the same.
3. In combination, a packet for cigarettes including an outer container of tubular form and a tray slidable in said outer container and having a back wall, a match holder including an attaching plate pasted to the back wall of the tray, match stems integral with the attaching late, said match stems and attaching plate eing fiat and thin and being accommodated between the back wall of the tray and the opposed wall of the container when the tray 1s inserted in the container, said match stems having heads applied thereto, a covering for the heads and stems, said covering being constructed of paper treated with wax, oil or the like and comprising a back wall interposed between the matches and the tray, a front wall extending down in front of the matches, and side iaps integral with the back wall and overlapping and pasted to the front wall, and a rip 'string for severing the front wall from the back Wall.
4. In combination with a acket of cigaa-n attaching plate pasted to the walls o the acket and having inatch stems integral wit each end thereof, said match stems having heads applied to the ends thereof, a covering for t e matches at each end of the plate said covering completely surrounding the matches and being constructed of paper treated with wax, oil or the like so as to render it impervious to moisture and also render it capale of so insulating the matches as to prevent the substances thereof from enetrating to the cigarettes and impairing t e avor or qualities thereof or otherwise ailecting the same, and a rip string for each covering.
5. In combination, a packet for cigarettes including an outer container of tubular form and a tray slidable in said outer container and having a back wall, a match holder including an attaching plate pasted to the back wall of the tray, match stems integral with the attaching plate, said match stems and attaching plate being flat and the like so a-.s to render it impervious to moisture and also capable of so insulating the matches as to prevent the ,substanees thereof from penetrating into the cigarettes and impairing the flavor and quality thereof or otherwise affecting the same.
