Suitable packing 23' is placedv on the seat'under the means 15, to seal the seam between the jacket and kettle and to soften the seat for the flange The flange QO is provided with a threaded bore 25 for a belt or screw 26, which extends through an opening 28 in a clamp 29 provided with a heel 30 resting on one'side'of th flange 20 and with a toe 31 engaging the upper-side of the flange 15. In the embodinient shown, a number of clamps 29 are employed, each engaging a portion of the flange 15. By using, a plurality of clamps the strain on theflange 15 is so localized as to eliminate entirely any danger of causing any strain upon the enamel. I
Of course, it will be understood that the clamps 99 may be varied in length .to suit each particular-.condition. For example, where the danger of injuring the enamel is increased, each clamp may be made smaller and the number of clamps employed thereby increased, or, forrougher work, the clamps may be longer than illustrated, thereby reducing the number employed. If, incasting the kettle, the flange 15 is warped, or in any other manner deformed, such unevenness can be taken care of by applying more or less pressure to the various clamps, avoiding the strain upon the kettle, whichwould result from the use of a continuous clamp endeavoring to press out the warp in the flange, and thereby placing strain on the kettle wall, which would inevitably crack or break the enamel. 'The seam between the flange 15 and the seat 22 may be made gas-tight. I prefer to place the flange 15 far enough below the flange 10 to permit the ready removal of the clamps29 and the bolts 26.
I have illustrated this embodiment and these particular details for the purpose of better describing my invention. I do not wish to be limited to such embodiment or such details, as it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous and extensive departures may be made from the form and details of the embodiment shown without departing from the spirit of the invention. I

In combination, a jacket provided with a flange about its mouth having an annular recess in the inner edge thereof forming provided With means to be employed in con- I a seat for a kettle flange, a kettleprovided with an annular flange on the outside Wall members, each provided With a heel resting upon the jacket flange, and a toe resting upon the kettle flange and means for drawing said clamps down upon said flanges to hold said kettle and jacket together.
2. In combination, a jacket provided With a seat, a kettle and mechanism for fastening the kettle and jacket together, including means on the. kettle resting on said seat and a plurality of clamps for clamping said means in said seat and attaching means for attaching the clamp to the jacket.
3. In combination, a acket and an enameled kettle and mechanism for connecting the kettle to the jacket comprising an annular flange on the outside of the kettle Wall and a plurality of clamps for clamping said flange to the'kettle, said clamps extending all around the kettle and jacket and means for fastening the clamps to the jacket.
4. In combination, a jacket and a kettle provided With an annular flange, clamping means for clamping the flange to the jacket, and devices for causing said means to exert different pressures at diflerent points about said flange.

8. In combination, a jacket and an enameled kettle, mechanism for connecting said jacket and kettle together With a gas-tight joint, comprising an annular member and a plurality of devices for clamping said member With different pressures at different points, and thereby connecting the kettle and jacket together.
