An'important 'object of the invention yis to provide `means of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, Ainexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable. and 'convenient in use.
Other' objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during thev course In the accompanyingv drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout'the same,
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a press having my attachment applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, Fig. 4L is a transverse sectional view taken online a-Ll of Fig. 1, and,
Fig'. 5 is a detail' section takenthrough one of the operating cylinders andv assoL ciated elements of the attachment.
- horizontal slats 16, and
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates longitudinal beams of the top-member of the press. Secured to the-lower surface of these beams 10 are spaced transverse strips 11, as shown. liigidly connected with the ends of the beam 10 are vertical bars or rods 1:2, extending downwardly for rigid connection with transversev bottom bars or members 12', as shown.
The numeral 14: designates the sides of the press, each of which comprises an upper beam 15, preferably arranged upon the outer sides of spaced strips or rigidly secured thereto. y The strips 16 are rigidly attached at their lower i Specicationof Letters ."Patent. i

sides thereof. rIhe ranged upon the vouter at .their ends with beams 17 are vprovided reduced cylindrical extensions or trunnions 18, adapted to be'pivotally mounted within cylindrical openings 19, formed in the transverse beams 12.' The *openingsv 19` afford'mea-ns whereby theipivot points ofv the sides' 111 may be adjusted inwardly'or outings 19y by pryingtlie beams 12 apart.
As more clearly shown in Fig. '4, the
numeral Q0 designates the vbottom-plunger which is vertically movable.
vends to av horizontal beam`17, which is ar- My attachment comprises cylinders 21 arranged at opposite ends of the press lnear and beneath the beams 10. As shown in Fig. 5, each cylinder 21 has its ends closed by caps 2Q, preferably having screw-threaded engagement therewith. 'Mounted to re'- lciprocate within the cylinder 21 are pistons 28, having connection with piston rods 2%1,
operating through stufling boxes '25. vrlhe piston rods 24 have their ends rip-turned vor hooked, 'asshown at 26, to engage within rings 27, carried by eye-bolts :28, which pass through the ends of the beams 10 and are rigidly connected therewith.
As clearly shown in Fig. 45,
ends'of the cylinder 21, and these. pipes connect with a pipeBO, having connection with As more. clearly' shown in'Fig.
therein, which has connection with a pressure supply pipe 33, havinga cut off valve v ,pipes 29 lead into the caps 22,v and hence into the opposite' 341 connected therein. The pressure supplyv exhaust pipe 85 connected has a cut offvalve 36 connected therein, as shown.
As more clearly shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4, the beams'lOare provided upon their lower edges with openings or notches 37, which receive the transverse pipes 30, therein. The cylinders 21 and associated elements aie supported by transverse bars `38, which engage with the upper sides of the `beams 10 and have openings 39 for the passage of the ends of the pipe 31, such pipe being held therein by means of clamping bolts Ll() or the like.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows:
y The sides 14 may be swung to a more or less open position, as indicated in dotted lines, in Fig. 3, and the material to be pressed pipe 31 has an into bales, such as paper, fed therebetween upon the bottom 20. The sides let are then v swung inwardly by'han'dv and the rings-27 engaged upon the hooked ends 26 -of the vpisfv tonkrods 24, such piston rods being-1n'l the outer position.
whereby pressure is simultaneousl-yv suppliedI to the opposite ends of the two cylinders.
.This application of pressure within the cylinder causes the pistons 23to` move inwardly, drawing the-piston lrods 24 inwardly.
f ,These movements of the piston rodsswing lthe sides .14. to the inner position and the pressure -is retainedv in the cylinders, duringthe pressing operation, whereby the sides are @The pressure supply. jvalve 34 is now closed and the exhaust valve 36 is opened whereby the-pressure exhausts fromfthe cylinders 21 to the atmosphere or in supply tank. The
' pistons 23 are now free to move outwardly,
and the rings 27 may disengage the rods 24.
, Thebottom plunger 20 is flowered, and the vso bale may be pushed out of the press through yeither open side thereof.v 1
It is obvious that my attachment-may be used m connection with various presses, and
, fthe use vin conneetion'withthe pressshown 1 lis for the purpose` of illustration, and the v inventionmis inno sense restricted to suc-h application.,`
