Description

C. A. MARSHALL.
Improvement in SelfSealing Fails. No.124,145. Patented Feb.27,1a72.
" NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-SEALING PAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,145, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MARSHALL, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Self-Sealing Pail, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing making a part of the same.
SPECIFICATION.
Figure 1 is a side View of the pail. is a view of the top. vertical section.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in the dil'erent views.
My invention pertains to an improvement in the special class ot'pails or buckets wherein a rod projects up from the bottom and through the cover, so-that the latter may be secured by means of a screw-nut working on said rod. Heretofore the rods orbolts thus arranged have been rigidly connected with the bottoms of the pails or buckets, and have hence proved a constant obstruction or impediment in cleaning, filling, &c. They have-likewise rendered the pails mainly impracticable for use as receptacles of any substance save liquid or semi-liquid ones, and, from their liability to become or work loose, have often rendered the pails temporarily or permanently useless. lo remedy these and other faults, I employ a detachable bolt or rod and a screw-eye in the bottom of the pail, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Fig. l, A represents the pail, which may be of any desired capacity and shape. B is the cover. The edge ofthe under side thereof is rabbeted out, thereby forming Fig. 2 Fig. 3 is a transverse a boss, c, Fig. 3, which is made to fit snugly the inside ot' the pail, whereas the upper part ofthe cover projects over upon the brim thereof, as shown in said iigure. Said cover is secured to the pail by means of a bolt, D, Fig. 3, the lower end of which is formed into a hook, and is caught in an eye, E, said eye being secured in the center of the bottom ot' the pail by any appropriate means. On the upper end of the bolt is cut a screw, F, to which is tted a finger-nut, G, whereby the cover is screwed down upon the pail, as follows: In puttin g the coverupon the pail, the end oi' the bolt is passed through it, and upon the protruding end is screwed the Init, thereby drawing the cover down upon the brim ofthe pail. Between the cover and brim is interposed a gasket, b, of rubber or other suitable material, whereby the joint is made air-tight. For additional security a groove is made around in the edge of the brim, so that the material of the gasket may be pressed down between two continuous surfaces; but for ordinary use the groove may be dispensed with as a smooth level brim will answer.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the nut G and the detachable screw-rod or bolt D, provided with a hook on its lower end, with the screw-eye E and coverB ofthe pail, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
CHARLES A. MARSHALL.
