WITNESSES PEER EDWARD JOHNSON AND EDWARD ANDERSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LADDER-CLAMP.
1 241,392. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1917.
Application filed August 10, 1916. Serial No. 114,158.
' United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York,-.
' have invented a new and Improved Ladder Clamp, of which" the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
. This invention relates to ladders and par ticularly to clamps. for providing an exten sion or for a connecting of two or more ladderstogether, and has for an object the provision of an improved arrangement which .may be quickly applied and quickly 'removed and while in place. will rigidly hold the parts together.
Another object in view-is to provide a clamp of a substantially U-sha'ped structure with a bracing extension and a clamping member arranged to be moved'out of the way when applying the U-shaped member.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lower part of a ladder with a short extension clamped thereto, an embodiment of the invention being shown in connection therewith. I
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a clamp embodying the invention.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through a clamp disclosing an embodiment of. the invention, the same being on a slightly enlarged scale.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a ladder of any suitable construction provided with the rungs 2, and 3 indicates an extension ladder provided with rungs 4. If desired the rungs 4: may be omitted as these members form no part of the present invention. The
, invention is comprised in the various clamps 5, all of which are of identical construction but arranged so that the clamps on one side will engage the under surface of the rungs 2 while the clamps on the opposite side will engage the upper surface.
The various clamps 5 are made as shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3, in which it will be observed there is provided a U-shaped member 6 formed with a backsection 7 and end sections 8 and 9, said .back section and part of the.end sections being provided with a reinforcing rib 10. The end section 9 is provided with an enlargement 11 merging is rotatabl intorib 10, said enlargement being formed with a hollowed-out portion 12, as shown in Fig. 3, for accommodating the cup 13 which screw passing through a threaded aperture in the enlargement 11. The cup or foot 13 is preferably roughened so as to not readily sli when the clamp is being used.
The end section 8 is provided with an enlargement 16 forming a half tubular member which is designed to partially surround the various rungs 2-when the clamp is in use. This enlargement assists in hold-' ing the clamp in proper position and also by acting on the rungs stiffens the ladder at the point where the clamp is located. A
groove 17 is also preferably made on the outer surface of the enlargement 16, which groove may be used for receiving a wire or other clamping means passed around the enlargement 16 and around one of the rungs whereby'the clamping member is tied in position. This tying member may be used or not, as preferred.
In forming the clam s they are'preferably all made identical in construction and clamp for binding said sections together at the part that overlaps, said clamp comprising a spanning body for spanning said sections, a clamping screw arranged on one part of said body adapted to press against one of said sections and draw the opposite section against the first mentioned section,
mounted on a screw 14, said.
and a bracing extension shaped to partly surround one of the rungs of one of said sections for preventing independent movement of said last mentioned section in respect to said clamp.
