amen tow tom to movein .unison osoim v. nowl L or NEMAI-ILTNEBBASKIAQ DUMPIN'G-SCRAPEB.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR V. HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nemaha, inthe county of Nemaha and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Scrapers and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make anduse the same. 3 f j 5' This invention relates to a dump scraper, and the primary object. ofthe. invention is to provide a scraper which will dump itself,
after it'has been raised a-certain distance by the operator thereof through the medium of thehandles 7 Another object of this invention is to provide a. dump scraper structureincluding an ordinary scraper bottom which. has a clevis pivotally connected to: its forward end,,to which clevis is connected a plurality of upstanding eyes and to provide handles, the forward ends; of which are pivotally connected to the upstanding-eyes.
A still further object of this lnvention 'is to provide resilient rods or arms which are carried by: have their ends angled and extending the sides of the handles and through the handles-for insertion into slots formed in the sides of the scraper bottom for causing the handles and the scraper bot for alimited distance, after which the ends ofthe resilient arms move out of the slots and allow the scraper bottom to dump or move forwardly to a dumping position, independently. of the movement of the handles.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1' is a side elevation of the improved dump scraper.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of'the scraper showing parts in section, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the scraper showing the same in a dumped position.

entirety, which has a horizontal bottom having a rear end3 formed thereon and extending perpendicularly therefrom, and'upstanding sides 4, the forward edges of which curve downwardly as shown at..5. so
as to provide a scraper for scooping :or scraplng up dirt or, the like whlch is to be transported from one place to another. The
The legs 7 of the clevis 8 are-fiatandlie in substantiallyf a horizontal plane and'they have ears 12 attached thereto shortdistances forwardly of the pivotal points '9: of the legs of the clevis as clearly shownin the drawings. The forward ends of bars 13. are
turned down and pivotally, connected to the v upstanding ears 12 as shown at 14:. The bars 13 form the sides or legs of a'substantially u-shaped. bar 15- to; which is. connected "handles 16. A suitable-brace 17 is connected to the handles 16 and to thebight portion of i the Ushaped clevis, as clearly shown in ,Fig. 2 of the drawings. The side bars or legs. 13 .of'the .Ushaped member 15. have resilient rods or wires connected thereto in anylsuitable manneras shown at 19. v The forward ends" of theresilient rods 18 are connected to the bars 13, while the rear ends .20 of these resilient rods are bent at right. angles to the bars 13 and extend through openings 21 formed in-the bars. The angled endsQO of the resilient rods 19 extend into slots 22 which are formed in the sides 4 of the scraper bottom 1 and form means for connecting the handles 16 and the U-shaped bar 15 to the scraper bottom. When the scraper is being loaded, it is positioned, as
shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and after it has been loaded and it is desired to dump the scraper, the handles 16 are moved upwardly which moves the scraper upwardly therewith into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, or until the handle 16 and the legs 13 assume substan- I i tiall'y a vertical position at which times the angled ends 20 will have traveled out of the ends the' slot 22 which slotsextend be yond the ends'of'the sides tof the scraper bottom as'clearly shown Fig. 2 "ofthe drawings. This disconnects the scraper bottom 1 and the U-shaped member and allows, thescraper bottom to' fall forwardly into the position illustrated 'in solid lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, which allowsit-tof empty or dump its contents. The rear end 30f the'scraper bottom Fhas' ajpair of spurs v2%t"carriedv thereby which extendinto the ground when the scraper is in a dumping position, so that during the forward travel of the scraper after it has been dumped, the I scraper w'illbe prevented fromsliding along the ground and consequently the pull of the draftvanimal will be administered tothe scraperv bottom' in such away 'asto cause nthefront'edge thereof to move downwardly, consequently moving the rear end 3' up- :wardly and righting the scraper bottomi-L During the righting movement of the scraper bottom 1, the angled end 20 will pass into the'slots 22 and the scraperwill be ready for the operation previously described. R I 1 v In reducing the'invention to practice cer :claimed. i
What is. claimed is thecombination, a clevis pivotally conl. In a scraper'structure, of a scraper bottom,
- nected-to the sides of said bottom and 6X- v tending-forwardly therefrom, a substantially Ueshaped bar, flthe. forward ends of the legs of'saidsbar being pivotally connected to'said clevis, handles attached to the "rear ends of the legs of said bar, the sides of said scraper bottom being provided with longitudinally extending slots, resilient arms carried by thelegs of the U-shaped member and having their rear ends bent and extendingthrough the legs and intosaidslots for connecting said handles and Ufshaped member to said scraper bottompthe legs of i said'U-shaped member being connected tosaid clevis eccentrically of the'pivot con nected between the clevis and'the scraper bottom so that the angle ends of said resilient rods will move out of said slots for disconnecting said scraper bottom and "said handles when thecscrap'er bottom reaches substantially a perpendicular position during its dumping movement '2. In a scraper structure, the combination, of a scraper bottom, a'clevis pivotally con- :nected to the sides of saidbottom'and extending forwardly therefrom, a substantially U-shaped bar, the forward ends'of the legs ofsaid bar beingpivotally connected to said clevis, handles attached to the rear ends of the legsof said bar, the sideszof said scraper bottom being provided: with r 1 so that the angle ends of said resilient rods will move out'of said v slots for disconnecting said scraper bottom'and said handles whenvthe scraper bottom reaches substantially a perpendicular position-during its dumping movement, a pair of spurs attached to and projecting beyond the-upper edge of the rear side of said scraper bottom and adapted-for embeddingin the ground when the scra per bottom. is in a dumped position for causing the-scraper bottom tog-right itself upon forward pulling-movement'thereupon. I Intestimony hereof I affix my signature iii-presence oftwo witnesses.
