Description

THOMAS OSWALD AKED, OF ST. THOIVIAS, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SPINNING-insomma SPINDLE.
ieioeoe.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OswALD Anni), a subject of the King of Great Britain and resident of St. Thomas, province of Ontario, inthe Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spinning-Machine Spindles, of which the following description having reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings is a specification.
My invention relates to spindles for the class of spinning, twisting and like machines wherein flyers are used and to that type of spindle which does not revolve with a flyer, and which is therefore known and usually styled a dead spindle. As is well known in this type of spindle considerable difficulty is experienced in providing means for ef fecting the eicient lubrication of the parts rotated upon or about them. My present invention consists in the formation or construction of certain of the parts hereinafter described whereby the result desired is attained'.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation (showing the end view of the lifter rail o) with a spindle and parts made in accordance with my invention and a bobbin mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the parts shown by Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan on line A--B of parts shown by Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 1 but illustrates a modification hereinafter described.
The dead spindle 2 is fixed upon the lifter rail c and upon said spindle I mount a tube 3 which is free to revolve thereon in a manner well known. This tube 3 has its upper end plugged or filled with a bearing or plug 4 from which extends a pin or projecting rotary spindle 5 downwardly from the plug into the spindle 2. To receive this spindle 5 I form an axial opening 2a in the upper end of the dead spindle 2, so that the lower conical end of the spindle 5 may take therein and rotate freely thereon. The opening 2a is made sufficiently long to take an appropriate length of the rotary spindle 5 to aEord stability to the tube 3 as the same may be pressed in a lateral direction. At the lower end of the tube 3 an appropriate split ring or like device 6 is inserted so that it may take into an outer groove 2b formed in the dead spindle 2, thus securing the tube 3 upon the dead spindle in order that Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Sept. 25, i917..
Application filed December 30, 1915. Serial No. 69,416.
when the operative removes the bobbin 7 therefrom said tube 3 is not detached from the spindle 2. In cases where the formation of a groove 2b in the dead spindle weakens the latter more than is desired, then (as shown by Fig. 4) to prevent the tube 3 from being readily removed from the dead spindle I turn the outer end 3a of said tube 3 in a radial direction so as to form a radial flange thereon and over the tube 3 I place a plate 8 having a recess 8a to receive the radial flange 3a of the tube 3 which will prevent the removal thereofas will be understood. The upper surface of this plate 8 is similar to the upper surface of the washer 9 shown by Fig. l, both of which are to receive the drag washers 1() for the purposes well known. By the employment of the plate 8 the groove 2h in the spindle 2 is not required, hence said spindle 2 may retain its full strength throughout its length. rIaking over the tube 3 is the bobbin 7 which is arranged to rest upon the drag washers 10 in manner well known, thus as said bobbin is rotated upon said drag washers when it contacts with the tube 3 said tube 3 will also freely rotate about the dead spindle 2. As shown by Figs. 1 and 4, the upper end of the bob* bin is substantially flush with the upper end of the plug 4, the arrangement being such as to facilitate the feeding of the lubricant into the cavity 4a.
In order to facilitate the lubricating of the spindle 5 I have holes or chiots 11 made through the plug 4 to lead into the conical opening 2C at the upper end of the spindle 2, while an appropriate cavity 4a is formed in the upper end of the said plug 4, into which the lubricant may be poured so that the same may travel down the ducts 11 into the position at the base of the spindle 5 as will be understood.
Such being the nature and object of my said invention, what I claim is 1. In spinning machines, in combination, .a dead spindle having an axial opening, a tube fitting loosely thereover, a plug fitting within said tube and having a cavity at its upper end and ducts leading through said f plug from said cavity into proximity to the upper end of said spindle, and a pin extend ing from said plug within said axial opening.
2. In spinning machines, in combination, a dead spindle having an axial opening, a tube taking loosely thereover, a plug fitting Within the end of said tube, and having a cavity at its upper end and duets leading through said plug from said cavity into proximity to the upper end of said spindle, an extension from said plug leading Within said axial opening, a bearing at the lower end of said extension, said dead spindlehaving a groove formed in its inner end portion, and a split ring fitting Within said groove.
`3. In spinning machines, incoinbination, a dead spindle having an axial opening, a tube fitting thereover, a plug fitting within said tube with its upper surface flush with the end of said tube, a rotary spindle extending from said plug, the deadspindle being provided with an axial opening for thereception of said rotary spindle, and 'with a conical opening at its upper end', `said plug being provided With a cavity formed in its upper end and With ducts leading from said cavity, and nieans for preventingthe ready detachment of said tube.
4. In spinning machines, in combination, a dead spindle having an axial opening formedtherein, a tube fitting loosely over said spindle, a plug fixed in said tube, a pin projecting from said plug and extending within `said axial opening to act as a support, said plug being provided With a cavity and With'ducts leading from said cavityymeans C` for preventing the ready removal of said tube, a bobbin fitting over said tube with its-upper end arranged to leave the cavity ifn the plug free to facilitate the feeding of lubricant, and a support for said dead 35 Copies of this patent may be obtained for -ve cents each, by 'addressing kthe Commissioner oft Patents,
