CHARLES EDWARD OMA'LLEY, OF MANSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOTTLE-CAP.

Application filed December 1, 1916.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that L-CHARLES E. OMAL- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Cap; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, .clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottle caps, and has for its object'to provide a device of this character which embodies novelfeatures: of construction whereby it can be readily removed from the bottle by the fingers, and without the necessity of using any -which provides for holding the variousspecial form of opener.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a manually removable bottle cap which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be readily applied to a bottle in the usual manner,
parts of each cap securely together so that the caps can be handled in bulk without danger of the parts becoming separated, and which can be easily removed from the bottle .by the fingers of one hand.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a manually removable bottle cap constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same as seated upon the mouth of a bottle.
Fig. 2 is-a similar view, looking at the cap from a position at right angles to that of Fi 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bottle cap.
Fig; 4 is a transverse sectional View, on the line 4- 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the wire finger piece, showing the same as removed from the cap.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated Specification of Letters Patent. Pat gntqgfl Sgptb 118, 1917,,
Serial No. 134,400.
in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters,
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the reference character 1 designates the upper end of a bottle neck, the mouth thereof be ing surrounded by the usual exterior rib 2 which provides the shoulder around which the flange of a metal cap can be readily crimped. The cap is formed of sheet metal in the usual manner, and includes a circular top 3 which is surrounded by a depending peripheral flange 4, said flange being adapted to be crimped and thereby brought into a firm engagement with the exterior shoulder at the mouth of the bottle. The usual compressible lining 5, which may be formed of cork or other suitable material, is arranged within the cap and fitted against the top 3 thereof, so as to be compressed against the mouth of the bottle and form an airtight seal whenthe cap is seated in position.
The opening means includes a finger piece A which may be conveniently formed of spring wire, and has a substantially LL.
shaped formation, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 6. The arms 6 of the U-shaped finger piece extend transversely across the interior of the cap, fitting between the compressible lining 5 and the top 8 of the, cap, and being received within grooves 7 pressed outwardly from the top of the cap. The free ends, of the arms 6 are extended downwardly at 8 and are housed within the flange 4 at one side of the cap. being received within corresponding crimps l. The looped end 9 of the U- shaped finger piece is bent downwardly to Provide a tang which projects considerably below the fianges of the crimped cap on the opposite side thereof. Suitable crimps 4 are also provided in'the flange a of the cap for the upper ends of the a and upwardly thereon the cap can be unseated and removed from the bottle. In
this connection, it may be mentioned thatpinched around these contracted portions 6,.
as indicated at 7, for the purpose of fastening the looped finger piece within the cap and preventing it from becoming accidentally disengaged therefrom when the caps are handled in bulk. The downwardly extending portions'of the finger piece A at opposite ends of 'the arms 6 may also be provided at their junction with the said arms with seats or depressions 11 for engagement with the edges of the cap lining 5. Owing to the compressible nature of the lining 5 the edges thereof will readily expand and seat themselves within the depressions 11, thereby holding the lining in position within the cap and preventing it from becoming separated from the cap.
This construction admits of the caps being handled in bulk, wh1ch is quite essential in a device of this character.
shaped wire finger piece havingthe arms.
thereof extended transversely across the interior of the cap under the lining and provided with reduced portions, the free ends of the arms being extended downwardly within the crimped flange, while the looped end of the finger piece is extended clownwardl below the crimped flange on the opposite side of the cap to provide a tang, the downwardly extended ends of the finger piece being provided at their junction with the arms with notched seats to receive the edges of the compressible lining, and the top of the cap having grooves pressed outwardly to receive the arms, the walls of the grooves being pinched around the before mentioned reduced portions of the arms to lock the finger piece in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name'to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES EDWARD OMALLEY.
