Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1917.
Application filed August 4, 1915. Serial No. 43,657.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. A-rwoon, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Milford, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Threading Attachments for Loom-Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved threading b'etween said opposing walls or surfaces attachment for the shuttle of a loom, the ob ject of the invention being to provide an improved attachment of this character which enables the eyelet of the shuttle ,to be readily and very quickly threaded, and which is nonsuckable and serves to prevent the sucking of the thread through the eyelet.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a loom shuttle provided with a hand threader attachment constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same in the act of being threaded.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the same.
Fig. 8 is a detailed elevation of the block and thumb lever.
Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 2.
The shuttle 1 is provided near one end with a recess 2 which extends to the left hand side thereof. In accordance with my invention I provide a block 3 which is adapted to fit in said recess 2 and the outer sides of which correspond with those of the shuttle. This block is provided, at the outer side, with an extended arm 4 which has a rabbet 5 on its outer side to receive the side or wall 6 of the shuttle, said arm 4 being arranged on the inner side of said wall and being secured thereto by a screw 7 The said block 3 also has a recess 8 at its outer end, next the end of the shuttle, said recess forming an air chamber. This air chamber has an outlet or vent 9 at the outer side. A vent slot 10 extends from said chamber to the in ner end of said block as at 11. The block is recessed in its outer side as at 12 to form a fixed jaw 13, one side of said jaw being oblique as at 14 and in the said oblique face or side of said jaw 13 is fitted a tubular eyelet 15 which is open at one side as at 16, said opening corresponding with the oblique side or wall .1 of said jaw and said eyelet being arranged in the angle between said oblique side or wall and thebottom of the recess 12, A thumb lever 17 is' arranged and shaped to exactly fit in said recess 12 and has an oblique end 18 opposed to and adapted to impinge against and to be moved, from the oblique wall 1 1 of the fixed jaw or shoulder 13 of the block. A thread slot 19 is formed when the thumb lever is opened. Said thumb lever is connected to the block by a spring 20 which serves to normally close the thread slot and form the pivoting member of the thumb lever. The thumb lever has a tail or arm 21 which is arranged on the inner side of the shuttle wall 6 where it is adapted to be readily pressed by the thumb to open the slot. By first pressing on the arm or tail of the thumb lever the thread slot 19 may be opened to enable the eyelet to be threaded, as shown in Fig. 1. By the provision of the air chamber 8, and the vents 9 and 10 sucking of the thread through the eyelet is prevented.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A hand threader attachment for a shuttle comprising a block adapted to be fitted in a recess in one side of the shuttle, said block having a shoulder provided with an oblique face and also having a recess extending to the outer side and from said oblique face, said block being further provided with a tubular eyelet arranged in the angle between said oblique face and the bottom of said recess and open on the side next said oblique face, the block being further provided with an air chamber, a vent opening leading therefrom and an opening leading thereto to the interior of the shuttle, a thumb lever arranged in said recess and having an oblique face corresponding with that of the block and movable toward and from said oblique face of the block to form a thread slot, said lever being further provided with an arm on the inner side of and pivotally mounted on one wall of the shuttle, and a spring to close the thread slot and forming the pivoting member of said lever.
2. A threader attachment for a shuttle comprising a block adapted to be fitted in a recess in one side of the shuttle, said block having a shoulder provided with an oblique face and also having a recess extending from the outer side of the block and from said oblique face, a tubular eyelet arranged in the angle between said oblique face and the bottom of said recess and open on the side next said oblique face, and a lever arranged in said recess and having an oblique face corresponding with that of the block, said lever being arranged for movement toward and from said shoulder of the block to form a thread slot.
3. A threader attachment for a shuttle comprising a block adapted to be fitted in a recess in one side of the shuttle, said block having a shoulder provided with an oblique face and also having a recess extending from the outer side of the block and from said oblique face, a tubular eyelet arranged in the angle between said oblique face and the bottom of said recess and open on the side next said oblique face, a lever arranged in said recess and having an oblique face corresponding with that of the block, said lever being arranged for movement toward and from said shoulder of the block to form a thread slot, and a spring forming the pivot member of said lever and serving to normally close the thread slot.
In testimony whereof I afifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
