Description

L. BAiLEY.
Try-Squares. No. 145,715.. PatentedDec. 23.1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD BAILEY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRY-SQUARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,715, dated Decemhcr 23, 1873; application filed June 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD BAILEY, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Squares,
- of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a s1de view of the try-square Fig. 2 is a View of the same in cross-section- The letter a indicates the handle, in this case a metallic handle, and b the blade, fitting into a slot made in the end of the handle. The letter 0 indicates a screw, which is driven into the handle and through the blade. It has a conical flare or swell where it passes through the blade. The hole I) in the blade is somewhat elongated vertically, as seen in Fig. 3, and is, by'preference, countersunk, so as to fit the conical part of the screw. The blade is so adjusted in the handle that the conical swell on the screw presses the blade firmly down 'upon the bottom of the slot, thereby holding the blade securely in place.
'Since I made this invention I have become aware of the patent for try-square to W. F. Arnold, No. 138,113, dated April 22, 1873. He uses a ca1n-shaped pin in the place of my screw with a conical swell. It would seem that a cam thus locked would be liable to become unlocked by a fall or strain, an objection to which my device is not open, and this is a difference most important.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the handle having a slot for the blade, the bottom of which is at a true right angle to the face side of the handle, the blade pierced witha hole for the screw with a conical swell, and the screw having a conical swell, all substantially as described.
WVitnesses: LEONARD BAILEY.
