Application filed. January 11, 1917. Serial No. 141,836,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JENNY B. FORTAIN and MINNA Vrm's, citizens of the United States, residing at Redondo Beach and Los Angeles, respectively, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Corset-Covers and Chemises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an under gar-v ment and particularly pertains to a combined corset cover and chemise.
It is the principal object of this invention to providea corset cover andichemise which are so constructed as to produce a single garment, a portion ofwhich may be utilized as a chemise and be positioned between the corset and the body of the wearer, and an other portion utilized as a corset cover and disposed over the corset.
Another object of this invention is to provide a garment of theabove description, the corset cover of which is so constructed as to permit the corset to be readily and easily positioned upon the body of the wearer and the corset cover to thereafter be drawn around the body in a sightly manner.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combined garment which has a single marginal edge around the arm holes and the neck, thereby producing a more neat appearance than would otherwise have been attained by separate garments.
Another object is to provide a garment of the above class which will effectively prevent the corset from becoming soiled.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a combined garment of the above class which is formed from a few pieces of goods which are cut in a simple manner and may be united without difliculty.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. V
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view of the garment as worn upon the body.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation illustrating the garment prior to its becoming drawn around the body of the wearer.
Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation illustrating the garment with parts broken away to disclose its twoply construction and with th b n g stress in a dis n g d Position,-
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 10 indicates a chemise formed with a body portion and" a suitable skirt. The chemise is formed with a pair of holes 11 and 12 and a neck opening 13. Mounted over the chemise is corset'cover which is composed of a front" piece 14 and a back piece 15. The front is formed with a cut away portion at its upper edge which conforms to the neck of the chemise and which extends upwardly over the shoulders of the wearer. The chemise is sewed t0 the front along the edge of the cut-away portion and the two edges of the garments are then snitably finished with trimming 16. The portions of the front. piece adjacent the arm holes 11 and 12 are also cutaway to conform to thear'm hole openings and are thereafter stitched along the ed 'e of the arm holes. The neck portion anc arm hole portions formed by the corset cover front piece are designed to extend approximately half-way around the neck and the arms. The back piece 15 is formed with complementary cut away portions which conform to the arm holes and the neck of the chemise and are thereafter stitched around the marginal edges of these openings in the same manner as described for the front piece. It will thus be seen that the corset cover will then be secured to the chemise around the arm holes and around the neck and that both garments will hang loosely from these points of connection.
The back of the corset cover is formed with a pair of binding straps 17 and 18 which extend from opposite sides of the back and are adapted to be drawn around the body of the wearer. Attention is directed to the fact that the edges of the front and back pieces of the corset cover are not connected along the sides and thereby permit these members to overlap. The binding straps are formed with button holes 19 and 20 which are adapted to engage a button 21 positioned upon the front of the corset cover. This button is mounted upon a reinforcing and plaiting strip 22 which extends partially around the waist of the garment and is sewed thereto in a manner to gather the corset cover at the waist. This will hold the surplus material in a neat manner and will permit sufficient fullness of the upper portion of the corset cove It will her be noted that the marginal edges of the corset cover are finished with a hem to produce a more workmanlike appearance.
When the garment is to be worn, it is first positioned upon the wearer with the head through the opening 13 and the arms through the openings 11 and 12. Both garments will then hang loosely upon the body. The front and back pieces of the corset cover. may then be raised and a pair of corsets 23 suitably positioned upon the body of the wearer. The corset cover is then lowered over the corset and the front piece drawn in around the waist in a manner to suitably conform to the figure, after which the binding straps 17 and 18 are drawn around the waist over the front of the corset cover and are both buttoned upon the button 21. It will be noted that when the corset cover is in position upon the body it will fit snugly thereto 'without unsightly tucks and wrinkles.
It will thus be seen that the combined garment here disclosed is simple in its construction and may be neatly. mounted upon the wearer without interfering with the use of the corsets.
While we have shown the preferred construction of our combined corset cover and chemise as now known to us, it will be understood that various changes in the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of our invention.
We claim:
1. An under garment, comprising a chemise, a corset cover having a one-piece front adapted to be sewed around the fore part of the neck and arm holes of the chemise, a plaiting strap positioned upon said front portion along the waist line and adapted to reduce the fullness of the garment, a back portion of said corset cover secured to the rear of the neck and arm holes of the chemise, and a pair of oppositely disposed bind ing straps formed integral with said back portion and adapted to pass around the body of the wearer and be secured to the plaiting strap.
2. An under garment comprising a chemise, a corset cover having a one-piece front adapted to be sewed around the fore part of the neck andarm holes of the chemise, a back portion of said corset cover secured to the rear of the neck and arm holes of the chemise, a pair of oppositely disposed bind ing straps extending from said back portion and adapted to pass forwardly around the body of the wearer, and means for securing the free ends of the straps.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
