SEC'IIONAL TOY ANIMAL.
Specification of Letters Patent. P wne -61 s m, 391 a,
Application filed septe mber 28, 1915. Serial No. 53,058.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,\.A.LVIN H. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in thecounty of San Diego and State of. California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Toy Animals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in sectional toy animals.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of sectional toy animals and to provide aset of blocks provided with means for detachably securing them together and capable of being interchanged and of enabling a plurality of grotesque animals to be made as well as natural animals, such as a vduck, goose, ostrich,
camel, elephant, pig and the like.
With these and other objects 1n view the invention consists in the construction and in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
I In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sectional toy animal constructed in accordance with this invention, the parts being arranged to form a pig,
Fig. 2 is a similar view the parts being arranged to form a duck,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, the sections being arranged to form a camel,
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of an elephant composed of the sections or members,
Fig.- 5 is a side elevation, the sections be ing arranged to form an ostrich,
Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive are detail views of the body sections,
.Figs. 11 to 13 inclusive are detail views of the head sections,
Fig. 14 is a detail view of a combined head and neck section,
Fig. 15 is a detail view of a neck section,
Fig. 16 is a view of another form of neck section which is adapted also to serve as a trunk section in forming the elephant,
Figs. 17 and 18 are leg sections or members,
Fig. 19 is adetail view of a tapered section adapted to form the ears of the pig, the beak of the duck and the tail thereof,
Figs. 20 and 21 are detail views of wiretail elements or members,
Fig. 22 is a detail view of a dowel pin.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. In the'accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1, 2, and '3'designate front intermediate and rear body sections having fiat abutting faces 4, 5, and 6 and provided in the said-faces with sockets 7, 8, and 9 adapted to receive a connecting pin 10 preferably constructed of wire and removably arranged in each of the said'sockets. By this construction, the sections may be readily connected and separated and the number of sections forming the body of the animal may be varied without having any unused pins projecting from the exterior of the animal. The intermediatesection 2 has fiat opposite faces 5 to fit against the flat faces of the front and rear end sections 1 and 3, and the intermediate section may be omitted and the end sections 1 and 3 secured together as shown in Fig. 2 when it is desired to form a duck. The front and rear body sections 1 and 3 are also provided at the bottom at opposite sides with sockets 11 and 12 adapted to receive dowel pins for connecting leg sections or members 13 or 14 to the said body section and the rear body section is also provided at the center of the back with a socket 15 adapted to receive wire tail elements or members 16 and 17 The front and rear body sections 1 and 3 are provided at the top with central sockets 18 and 19 adapted to receivedowel pins for connecting a top body section 20 to the'body formed by the. front, rear and intermediate sections to form the upper portion of a camel as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The top section which provides the hump of the camel is tapered and rounded at the top and is provided at the bottom adjacent to each end with a pin located near each end for engaging a socket 21.
The hump section or top section 20 is adapted to be readily placed on and removed from the body sections 1, 2, and 3. The
. front and rear sections 1 and 2 are also provided at their upper portions with inclined sockets 22 and 23 arranged at an angle to the flat faces of the substantially semi-spherical front and rear sections 1 and 2 to enable the neck sections 24 to be applied to the front body section 1 in forming the camel and the tapered section 25 to be mounted upon the rear section 3 to form atail in arranging the parts to form a duck or an ostrich as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings. The neck section 24 which is round has a slightly curved transversely disposed end face 26 to fit against the rounded front portion of the section 1 of the body and the other end 27 is mitered or beveled and has a concaved face to receive a head section 28,
to form the camel as shown in Fig. 3. The M curved face 26 enables the block or section to fit substantially the curved surface of the semi-spherical section around the openings 22 and 23. In forming the duck shown in Fig. 2 a combined neck and head section 29 is employed and in forming the ostrich shown" in Fig. 5, a neck section 30 and a head section 31 are used. The neck section 30 which is circular in cross section 'ta ers from .one end to the other and each o its end faces is transversely disposed substantially at right angles to its longitudinal axis.
The front section is also adapted to have connected to its upper portion at the socket 22 a head section 32 designed to resemble in practice the head of an elephant and having a reduced extension 33 adapted to have the mal.
The'front and rear sections 1 and 3 are approximately half round and a combined head and body section 35 may be substituted for the front section 1 to form the body of a pig. The section 35 has its front portion tapered to form the snout 36 and it has sockets 37 and 38-to receive dowel pins for connecting the sections 25 to the top of it and for connecting it to the intermediate section 2. In practice a plurality of the sections 25 will of course be provided and this will alsobe true of the legsections which may be arranged either singly or'double as shown. The sections may be constructed of any suitable material either word or metal and the dowel pins may be of a 1y desired length. Also various other form." of ani mals may be built up by the blocks or sections.
Also the centrall arranged dowel pins for connecting the cad sections will permit the headsto turn freely as well as the other sections which have the central sockets and connecting pins.
What is claimed is 1. A set of toy animal building blocks including separate interchangeable body sections provided with removable means for detachably securing them together to form bodies of diiferent shapes and sizes, said body sections comprising cylindrical and semi-spherical sections, and a tapered section cross sectionally circular and having a cyhndrical extenslon.
2. A set of toy animal building blocks including separate interchangeable body sections provided with means for detachably securing them together to form bodies of different shapes and sizes, said body sections comprising cylindrical and semi-spherical sections, and a top or hump section having a lower concave face arranged to fit substantially the curved surfaces of the said sections. Y 3. A set of toy animal blocks including a substantially semi-spherical body section having'an opening arranged at an angle to the flat face of thesaid section, and a block or section coiiperating with the semi-spherical section and having. a curved end face to fit substantially the curved surface of the semi-spherical section around the opening thereof, said block or section being provided with means for engaging the said opening.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I ALVIN H. SWEET.
