Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. ilil, fillil't..
Application led December 15, 1916.v Serial No. 137,096.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE'RECHTER, a citizen of the United States, reslding at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Comb- Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto improvements in comb cleaners.
The object of this invention is the provision of a cleaner bar especially adapted for combs and the bar provided with a series of spaced members adapted toextend between the teeth of the comb and movable from its upper position at the base of the teeth to a point near the outer end of the teeth for stripping or cleaning the teeth of any foreign matter `which may have collected therebetween and thus render the' comb sanitary). l
A still further object of this invention is to provide the cleaner bar and comb to which it is attached with a novel fastening member, which fastening member is adapted to hold the cleaner bar in its upper position at the base of the teeth.
'A still further object of this invention is the provision of a cleaner of' this "character which will be simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that may be manufacturedand sold at a low cost. With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth inthe claims heretoappended.
In the drawings :Y Figure 1 is a s1de elevation of a comb and cleaner made in accordance with this invention, and illustrating the cleaner in its uppermost position.
Fig. 2 1s a side elevation of a comb and cleaner with the cleaner in its lowered position. A
F ig. 3 is a blank illustrating the comb cleaner.

Fig. 5 is an end view illustrating the manner in which the comb cleaneris limited in its downward movement on the comb.
perspective view of thecoimb parallel with the back Like numerals ofA reference designate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawings.
Referring more particulaily to the draw-i ings, the numeral l designates the back of a comb, and 2 are the teeth, which may be all y. of the coarse variety or all of the fine, or as illustratedpart yline and part coarse. The comb 1 is provided at its opposite ends with enlarged terminal teeth 3, which teeth are provided neartheir lower ends with shoulders 4, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The shoulders 4' are provided by reducing the terminal teeth 3 and they serve as stops for the cleaner bar when moved toward the ends of the teeth when cleaning the comb.
The cleaner bar is designated 5 and is constructed of a single blank of metal which is provided centrally of its lengthwith a pluralityof openings 6 which deline ribs 7 which ribs are adapted to be positioned between the teeth of a comb and the teeth of the comb are adapted to extend throughthe ends of the arms 8 are bent inwardly as aty 9 to provide the guides which are adapted to rest upon the shoulders 4 to limit the down- .ward movement of the bar 5 on the teeth of the comb.
One ofthe side bars of the cleaner is provided intermediate its ends on its peripheral f edge with a substantially semi-circular enlargement 10, which enlargement is provided with an IL-shaped slot 11, the purpose lof which'will Vbe scribed. The back of the comb 1 is provided'intermediate its'ends on one side face with a slot 12, which slot is arranged horizontally or 1, and slidably rehereinafter more fully deceives a bolt 13, which bolt is adapted to reiz- I tend in the slot 11 in the enlargement 10 of the cleaner bar 5, and hold the cleaner bar in its upper position at the base of the teeth and against the back of the comb 1.
In use, it will be apparent by sliding the bolt horizontally yuntil it alines with the vertical portion of the Il -sh'aped yslot in the cleaner bar that itis only necessary to grasp ics the cleaning bar forcin the same downwardly toward the end o the teeth until the guide members come in Contact with the shoulders 4. The hair and other foreign matter may readily be readily wiped off the comb after which the cleaner bar may be returned to its normal uppermost position, thus leaving the comb in a thoroughly sanitary condition.
What is claimed is:
l. A comb cleaner including a Hat substantially rectangular metal bar provided centrally with a plurality of spaced longitudinally extending openings defining transverse ribs, which ribs are adapted to be arranged between the teeth of the comb, the sides of the strips bent upwardly to provide side bars and adapted to slidably engage the opposite sides ofthe comb to facilitate the placing of the ribs between the teeth thereof, the ends of the side bars bent angularly Iat right angles thereto and having their ends bent inwardly to provide guides for preventing the removal of the cleaner bar from the comb, and means for holding the cleaner bar up against the back of the comb, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A comb cleaner formed of a single piece of metal substantially rectangular in cross section and having its medial portion provided with spaced and transversely arranged openings, which extend longitudinally of the strip, said openings defining ribs, the ends of the ribs bent upwardly to provide spaced parallel longitudinally extending. side bars, the ends of the side bars being bent upwardly at right angles thereto having their ends bent inwardly in the direction of each other to provide guides, which are adapted to limit the sliding movement when the same is positioned upon a comb, and means formed on one side bar and engaging a portion of the comb for holding the same in its uppermost position.
3. A device of the class described, the
"combination with a comb having its back provided centrally with a horizontal recess, a bolt slidably mounted in the recess, the end teeth of said comb provided adjacent their lower ends with laterally projecting shoulders on the exterior thereof, of a cleaner bar, saidJ cleaner bar comprising spaced parallel longitudinally extending side bars, the lower edges of the side bars connected by spaced transversely arranged ribs, which are adapted to extend between the teeth of the comb, the opposite ends of the side bars bent upwardly and inwardly toward one another to provide guides, which are adapted to engage the end teeth of the comb and adapted to rest upon the shoulder when the cleaner bar is in its lowermost position, and means carried by one of the side bars for receiving the bolt therein and removably securing the cleaner bar in its uppermost position on the comb, as and for the purpose speclfied.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE RECHTER.
