Be it known that LANN. E. Woon, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cin cinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Book-Holders, of which the 'following specification is a full disclosure.

My invention relates to a bookholder in the nature of an improvement of the device illustrated in my former patent, numbered 1,035,290, dated Augustl, 1912.

The objects of the invention are to improve the cover holding provision, to render more simple and convenient the adjustments, to avoid the necessity of using' elastic tapes, or the like, and more specifically, to provide a-simple means, such as a continuous cord for holding' the book open in reading position, enabling theleaf turning without readjustment, the same instrumentality serving to secure the sliding base in adjusted position to accommodate the holder 'to different sizes of books and also serving' to adjustably support the holder relative to the reader, at the correct focal distance and angle of vision, for either a sitting` or reclining position.

The features of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which:-

The legs l, 2, are connected hy rigid crossbars 3, 4, 5, secured to the outer leg surfaces against which the book covers rest the bottom edge of the book resting on the adjustable base 6.` Preferably the hase is formed with the bifurcated ends 7, 8, between which the legs pass, and with a ver tical ledge 9, making the base preferably of bracket shape, and the base may be formed of one or more pieces as desired.

The means for engaging the opened up book covers comprise two strips 10, 11, the outer ends being' secured to the legs upon the side opposite to the side of securance of 'the cross strips 3, 4, 5, and preferably opposite or adjacent to one of these cross strips in position to transversely engage a medial portion of the book covers 12, 13, the book binding 14, lying between the opposing inner ends of the strips 10, 11, so that the strip 5 engages the back ofthe hook covers and binding,` and the strips 10, 11, engage the a inside of the book covers toward the binding, the reading pages 14 projecting out from the space between the ends of the strips `10, 11, the pages to be opened at the reading point and held in open position againstthe outer surfaces of the strips 10, 11. The base 6 is preferably provided at each end with the pairs of eyes 15, 16, adjacent the legs respectively, there being' an eye 17 on each of theouter ends of the strips 10, 11, `adjacent the leg's respectively, the eye groups 15, 16, 17, being preferably disposed to define the apices of an isosceles triangle uponeach side of the holder. At the top of the right hand legQ, is a hook 18, there being a similar hook 19 at the top of the other leg, and one of these hooks, the left hand one as shown, being' adjustably screwed into the leg and provided with a boss 20 for holding the cord in adjusted position against the leg.

One end of the cord is preferably secured to the right hand eye 17, and the other end is detachably secured to the top right hand hook 18. The cord passes downwardly from eye 17, through eyes 15, 16, on the right hand side, then upwardly through eye 17 across the holder, running parallel with strips 10, 11, through eye 17, on the left, then downwardly through eyes 15, 16, returning upwardlyI through eye 17, then upwardly to be looped under the clamp boss 20, of screw hook 19, from whence it is preferably looped around the pillow or chair back for the reader, the return end being secured to right hand hook 18, the holding loop length being adjustable to suit indi vidual requirements as to comfort, angle, distance, reading position or couch or chair. The cord arrangement relative to the slide-eyes provides a tackle on each side for securely and adjustably supporting' the base, the adjusted position, after determination, being fixed by securing the cord between the clamp hook 19 and the top of leg 1. The cord portion running parallel to cover holding strips 10, 11, holding the book pages open at the reading place, and it can be relaxed sufficiently to enable the pages to be turned. The strips 10, 11, of course, pass in rear of the reading' matter so that only the cord runs across the pages.

The holder is preferably of light wood, suitable to the use of an invalid, and straddles the lap ofthe reader, the legs prefer4 mind or body.

` and the use of the holder practically eliminates all manual effort incident to reading a book or magazine, the book can be left in the holder, open at the proper place, and the reading resumedby simply picking up and attaching the holder, there being no occasion to readjustthe cord after the initial adaptation to an individual requirement.

I claim f 1. A-bookholder comprising legs, the upper portion being connected by cross-bars, providing a body straddling and ya book yholding portion, cove-r engaging strips secured at their outer ends to the sides of the bookholder, their `inner endsbeing spaced, a base adjustable on the legs below said strips, a cord slidably connecting the base with Vthe holder, for adjusting the base, a portion of the cord passing across the holder, and'means for securin the cord to the holder to hold kthe base adjusted position and to adjustably suspend the upper end of the holder relative the reader.

A bookholder comprising legs connected by cross bars providing a book holding and body straddlingportionQcover engaging strips having their outer ends connected to the holder andthe. inner ends spaced, to hold the covers between the cross bars and strips and to enable the reading matter to be projected beyond the strips, and a cord adjustably connected with the holder and providing a body engaging loop and a page engaging span for holding the pages open in reading position. i V
