To all whom t may concern:
vvBe it known that I, Ronnu'r 4O. DoHM, a citizen `of the `United States, residing` `at Dane, `in the county of Dane and Stateof Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed attachment whereby means are provided for discharging the water in the upper portion of a pipe stock to cause the removal of all the water above the freezing point.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be operated from the ground above and without disturbing the curbing or the other stationary parts of the pump.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which may be readily applied without material structural changes to pumps of various forms and constructions.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The improved device may be applied to any portion of a pump below the frost line, but is preferably attached to the main outlet pipe 10 relatively near the barrel or cylinder 11 as shown. The improved device comprises a base portion 12 slightly concave at one side and with a central protuberance 13. The pipe 10 is provided with a vent aperture 111 with the outer portion of the vent counter-sunk toV receive the protuberance 13. respond in outline and are so constructed that when the member' 12 is clamped against thepipe with the protuberance engaging in the counter-sunk portion of the vent, a water-tight joint will be provided between the parts. The member 12 is clamped in any suitable manner to the pipe 10, preferably by a U-bolt 15 and clamp nuts 1G.
Extending from the rear face of the base :member 12 is a bracket-like structure 17 having an intermediate transverse recess 1S with the portion of the bracket between its recess and its upper end provided with a threaded aperture to receive a shut-off screw 19. Extending through the base member 12 and likewise through the protuberance 13 and into the lower portion of the bracket 17 is an orice or vent 20, and directed upwardly from the inner end of the vent 2O is a branch vent 21 which opens into the lower end ofthe opening 18 of the bracket. The upper end of the branch vent 21 is counter-sunk while the lower end of the screw 19 is convex to engage in the countersunk portion of the branch vent so that when the screw is turned downwardly, the vent 21 will be shut off and rendered water-tight.
At its upper end the screw 19 is provided with an eye to receive a hook on a turning rod 23. The rod extends upwardly through the floor of the curb of the well in convenient position to be manually actuated.
By this simple means, it will be obvious that when it is desired to draw off the water from the pipe 10, as for instance when danger of freezing arises, it is only necessary to rotate the rod 23 reversely a few turns to cause the convex point of the screw 19 to be withdrawn from engagement with the counter-sunk terminal of the vent 21 and thus permit the water to escape from the pipe. Then the pump is to be again used, it is only necessary to reverse the movement of the rod 23 to close the vent and permit the water to rise into the pipe.
The recess 18 opens away from the adjacent wall of the well so that the escaping jet of water will not be thrown against the wall, but will be deflected toward the pipe 10 and thus caused to flow downwardly over the cylinder.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied without changes to the pipe except to drill the vent 14C in the pipe and countersinking the outer terminal,
