SPIGOT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.-.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. MEN- NIoKi-IErM, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Sussex, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spigots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to spigots, and more particularly to that class of spigots which are used in connection with water tanks for watering animals.
An object of this invention is the provision of a spigot of this class, the spigot comprising a body having a pair of bores extending therethrough, one of the bores being adapted to communicate with a suitable pipe through which the water flows to the watering fountain, the other bore being adapted for use in draining the tank, and is normally closed.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a spigot having a pair of bores extending therethrough, the spigot comprising a body which is molded or cast in one piece of material.
lVith these and-other objects in view, my invention relates to the novel construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in t-he accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the spigot. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the spigot consists of a body 5 having a bore 6 extending longitudinally therethrough. The body 5 is preferably tubular in form, and is provided at its inner end with a reduced portion 7, and also formed at its outer end with a reduced portion 8, the reduced portions of the body being exteriorly threaded. The body is formed on one side thereof with an enlarged portion 9, the Opposite ends of the enlarged portion of the body extending` to the threads and the reduced ends of the main portion of the body. The periphery of the enlarged portion at its inner end is `curved to form a continuation of the curvature of the periphery of the main portion of the body, so that in cross section the body is annular at its inner end as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and is exteriorly threaded as at 10 for engagement in i a threaded opening in the water tank 11.
rlhe enlarged portion 9 of the body is formed with a longitudinal bore 12, the inner end of the bore extending in parallel relation with the bore 6 of the main portion of the body, and the outer end of the bore 12 being off-set as at 13, the outer extremity of the bore being threaded as at lt4 for connection with a threaded plug 15, which is adapted to close the bore 12.
In the practical use of my invention, the spigot is connected in a threaded opening in the bottom of the tank 11 by the threaded portion 10 of the spigot, the spigot being screwed into the opening of the tank 22 until the upper extremity of the enlarged' portion of the body is disposed flush with the upper face of the bottom of the tank. A valve (not shown) which may be of any desired construction, may be threaded upon the reduced portion 7 which projects upwardly into the tank proper, and a pipe (not shown) is adapted for threaded engagement with the reduced portion 8 of the body, the pipe being adapted to feed the water in the tank to a suitable drinking fountain (not shown). When it is desired to clean the interior of the tank, the plug 15 may be removed from the outer end of the bore 12, and as the upper end of the bore 12 is disposed flush with the inner wall and the body of the tank, it will be seen that all of the water contained within the tank may be drained therefrom. The bottom of the tank may then be cleaned and any sediment disposed thereupon may be discharged from the tank through the bore 12 whereupon the plug 15 may be again engaged in the bore 12 and the tank filled with water so that the same may be fed to the drinking fountain..
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A spigot comprising a tubular body, the opposite ends of said body being reduced and exteriorly threaded, said body having an enlarged portion formed on one side thereof between said reduced portions, said enlarged portion having a bore extending therethrough, means for closing said bore, and means for mounting the spigot in a suitable support, as and for the purpose described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a body having a bore extending threaded, said body having 'a'reduoed longi- `longitudinally therethrough, Said body betudinal extension at itsinner end.y Y 10 ing enlarged on one side thereof, the en- In testimony4 Whereofl hereunto aiiX iny larged side of said body having a bore eX-V signature in the presence of'tWo-Witnesses.
5 tending therethrough, means for closing the FREDERICK W. MENNIGKHEIM, JR.
last mentioned bore, the body and the en- Witnesses: larged portion thereof at the inner end of IRVIN D. Snowman, the body being annular in cross-section and i MAY EWALD.
