GAGE-COCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. SWART; a citizen of the United States, residing a W'atervliet, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage- Cocks, of which the following is a specification, I,
This invention'relates to improvements in gage cocks, water gages, or similar devices; being particularly useful in connection with boilers or containers of any character where the quantity of theliquid contents has to be ascertained.
Anobject of this invention is to provide a device that is very simple in construction and that isso constructed as to. permit of easy access to any part of the passage in the body for cleaning purposes.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of the gage.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Throughout the following detail description and on the various figures of the drawing, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
The body 1 of the device is threaded at one end for securing the same to the wall 2 of a boiler or other suitable container. The body is provided with a continuous straight clean-out passage 3, slightly enlarged at its outwardly projecting end and adapted to receive a removable closure member 4. Extending from the passage 3 of the body is the hollow neck or connecting passage 5 for the offset valve receiving member 6. This valve receiving member is provided at opposite ends with the stufling boxes 7 and extending through the valve receiving member 6 and the stuffing boxes 7 is the valve member or plunger 8 provided at one end with a handle or manipulating member 9 for revolving and sliding the same, and at its other end with the longitudinal passage 10. The passage 10 is provided with a transverse intersecting passage 11 adapted to establish communication between the Specification of Letters Patent.

longitudinalpassage of the body and the connecting passage 5 to permit the escape of the contents out through the outlet 12 at the curved end portion of the plunger, which end portion is so arranged, preferably, that it will direct the discharge laterally as the valve isopened.
It; will be readily seen that by moving the plunger 53, which fits its seat snugly, outwardly and at the same time rotating the plunger until the transverse passage 11 at one side assumes a vertical position registeringwith the connecting passage 5 a continuous outlet for the steam or fluid is provided for testing purposes. The discharge is stopped by moving the handle back into normalclosed position so that ,the transverse passage 11 will not register with the connecting passage 5 of the body and preferably until said passage is beyond the end stuffing box 7- to insure against leakage.
The most important advantage of the device consists of the special construction of the. body to permit thorough cleaning of the same. The main passage is straight and continuous throughout the body so that it affords ready access for the introduction of cleaning implements if such becomes necessary and furthermore does not require the reilnoval of the valve to accomplish the resu t. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A gage cock of the class described comprising a body having a clean-out passage therethrough, a closure member for said passage, a valve member for controlling the passage of fluid through the body and having an escape outlet, said valve member being shiftable in one direction to dispose its outlet in inoperative position exterior to the body of the valve and being shiftable in the other direction to bring said escape outlet within said body when discharge through the body is to be effected.
2. A gage cock of the class described comprising a body having a longitudinal cleanout passage therethrough, a valve member mounted in said body in spaced relation to the passage and having an escape passage therein normally disposed exteriorly of the body but adapted to be brought into the body into registry with the longitudinal passage upon longitudinal movement of the valve member.
lation to said passage and having an escape passage therein adapted to be brought into registry with the'longitudinal passage aforesaid, said valve member snugly fitting in the body and normally positioned so as to prevent escape of fluid through the body and movable revolubly and longitudinally to establish communication between the longitudinal passage and the escape passage.
7 4t. A gage cock of the class described comprising a body, the main portion'of which is provided with a longitudinal clean-out passage, said body comprising a hollow portion oii'set from the main portion and arranged substantially parallel With the main portion and havingcommunication with saidmain portion, a valve member mounted in said offset portion and having an escapepassage therein, said valve member being shiftable longitudinally and rotatableto establish Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner .of Patents,
communication between the longitudinal passage and escape passage, and a removable closure member for the outer end of the main body portion enabling access to the cleanout passage aforesaid.
5.. A gage cock of the class described com-.
prising a body having an offset valve're- 'ceiving portion, said body having a straight passage extending longitudinally thereof, a removable closure -me1nber 'forone "end of said passage, and a' rotatable plunger valve mounted in the offset portion and having a longitudinal passage at one end portion thereof, said plungervalve having a-transf verse intersecting passage adapted to establ1Sl1 communication between the longitudinal passage of the body and the escape passage upon rotation of' the valve, saidplunger valve being movable longitudinallyto-shift the end portion having the escapepassage thereininto a position exterior of the offset portion of the valve body; w
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
