Application iled May 25, 1916. Seria1 No. 99,886.
- To all wlwm z't may concern:
from another sash and engageable with both of said securing devices; and to provide a novel form of lock to coperate with the securing devices and specifically one having a barrel, a
bolt slidably mounted there1n,.a latch to tion of its urgmg spring and a means formthe barrel to mount the said latch,.and to providea device of the construction hereinafter set forth possessing the additional objects and advantages to be pointed out in relation thereto as the description progresses. and which is to be taken 1n connection with accompanying drawings illustrating one preferred embodlment.
In said drawings: l yFigure 1 is a, view in front elevation having my improvements applied thereto;
Fig'. 2 is a crosslsectional View on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2`2 of Fig. 1,
and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View on the line 3-e of Fig. 2.
Referringjspecifically to the drawings, a Window frame or easement is provided of which 4 is one of the side stiles. Mounted within the easement, are the usual upper and 6 respectively which slide relatively as usual in a vertical plane,
A prime desid'eratum of the present invention is to provide a means whereby the into such position sashes 5 and 6 may be fastened against relative'moveinent when in any position and to the frame of the window. To this end, a securing plate 7, is screwed as at 8 in a recess provided'in the stile 4. A second securing device is being lfastened as by means drawings, securing device 7 1s provided with transverse recesses or slots 12 while the securing device 9'-1s provided with transverse slots `or recesses 13, of the same width as'th'e slots 12 and adaptedto lie in the same planes therewith at diferent adjustments of the sash 5.. A- single fastening means, -for instance the lock generally designated 14 may be provided on' the lower sash 6 so as to engage both securing devices and thus fasten the sashes 5 and 6 in desired relative positions and to the frame 4.
One specific construction'of the lock 14' may be as follows: A barrel or casing 15 is provided with end walls in which a bolt 16 is mounted for movement slidably and longitudinallyof the casing 15. This bolt has an abutment 17 thereon interiorly of the barrel and adapted to be engaged by an expansion spring 18 which engages one end wall of the casing 15 and surrounds the bolt. Normally the bolt at an arm 16L projects into one of the slots 12 and at an arm 161 into one of the slots 13 as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. Asuitably rectangular hollow the bolt 16 to facilitate its manipulation. Integral with the barrel 15 are tangs 20 through which screws 21 pass to secure the barrel to the top ra' or stile of the lower sash 6. The barrel 15V is closed at its top by means of ashield 22 fastened to the barrel handle 19 1s provided if desired, on
as by means of setiscrews 23. in order to 16 retracted, the latch is adapted to enter a 16 and urged maintain the loclr bolt 24 is provided which notch or recess 25 in the bolt by means fastened to the latch and engaging one of the ta ugs 20. The latch is pivoted at 27 by means of a set screw engaging arlug'28 inv tegral with one end of the barrel 15.,
When the sashes are to be adjusted relatively, lock bolt 16 is retracted, being held or maintained in vsuch position by the cngagen'ient of latch 24 in the notch-25. 1t is clear that by sliding movement, as usual, the sashes 5 and 6 may be moved to the desired relative position. At various adjustments of a spring 26 'of the sas-hes,
the slots 12 and 13 will lie in the same planes. In order to vfasten the sashes at the adjusted positions, the latch 24 is swung out of engagement manually with the notch 25 whereupon the spring 18 urges the bolt 16 at arm 16b .into one of the slotsl 13 at arm 1Ga into the slot 12 in the same plane therewith. Thus the sashes will be locked against relative movement and againstv movement relatively to t e frame l. In order to accommodate relative movement of the sashes', where the securing device 9 projects beyond the stile 11, the sash 6 below the said securing device 9 may be cut away as is Since mei-ely the preferred embodiment has been illustratedand described, it ist0 be understood that changes in the details thereof may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of appended claim.
I claim:
l In a window sash lock, the combination of a barrel, a spring pressed sliding j bolt mounted in the barrel and projecting -from either end thereof, oppositely projecting arms carried by the one end of the bolt, the window sash having slots for the reception of the ends of the said arms, a latch pivot-l ally7 mounted on one end of the casing, the said latch being spring pressed, the bolt having a notch for the reception of the latch, Y
