Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 20, 1916. Serial No. 98,898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Tr-InoDosIA HAMNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Strainers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a strainer which is especially adapted for straining milk, and the like, although the strainer may be ad vantageously employed to filter other liquids, particularly those employed in the production of jelly.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a strainer of this character wherein a coil of novel construction is employed to detachably connect a filtering sack with a band, the shape of which is such as to enable the strainer to be mounted upon receptacles of different diameters.

Another object of the invention is to provide the strainer with a coil wherein one of the windings or rings of the coil are looped to provide the strainer with handles.

A further object of the invention is to provide one of the loops on the coil with an eye which may be employed as a keeper for one end of the coil.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The preferred embodiment of the inven tion has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is nec essarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a strainer constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same applied to a pail a portion of which is broken away.

Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the strainer.

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the coil included in the strainer.

Fig. 4: is a top plan View of the strainer.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, the letter A designates a strainer constructed in accordance with the invention which is shown mounted upon a pail B, with the strainer including a band 1 comprising spaced rings 2 and 3 connected by a ring of wire netting A.

The ring 2 which is of greater diameter than the ring 3 has formed thereon a bead 5 providing a continuous and circumferentially extending channel 6 exteriorly of the band 1. The bead 5 has formed therein at Cpliametrically opposite points openings 7 an 8.

A strand of wire 9 is wound to form a coil 10 with one of the rings, or windings 11 of the coil arranged in the channel 6, said ring or winding .11 having a portion thereof extending outwardly from the band 1 through the opening 7 and bent to form an upstanding and substantially triangular shaped loop 15, the lower end of which extends below the ring or winding 11 of the coil as shown. The free end of the ring or winding 11 of the coil extends exteriorly of the bead 5 through the opening 8 therein and is bent to form an upstanding and sub stantially triangular shaped loop 16 below which is formed from the extending end of the ring or winding of the coil, an eye 18, said

A fabric sack 19 which may be employed as a filter is provided at its mouth with a continuous channel 20 through which is passed the other winding or ring 21 of the coil 10, with a portion of the winding or ring adjacent its free end extending exteriorly of the channel and corrugated, as at 22, to prevent the convoluted portion of the winding or ring from being casually withdrawn from the eye 18 when passed therethrough.

When the band 1 and sack 19 are connected as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawing and it is desired to substitute a sack of different weave for the sack connected wit-h the band, the convoluted end of the winding or ring 21 of the coil is withdrawn from the eye 18,.so that the winding or ring can be withdrawn from within the channel at the mouth of the sack.

The winding or ring 21 may now be threaded through the channel at the mouth of the sack to be substituted for the one disconnected from the coil until the convoluted portion of the winding or ring extends exteriorly of the channel at the mouth of the sack. receptacle, such as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawing, by inserting the band 1 therein as shown.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection, with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a strainer has been provided in which the parts thereof may be easily disconnected. for cleaning purposes thereby providing a strainer for the purpose set forth which is entirely sanitary.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, 1s:

1. A strainer comprising a coil, a band to which one of the windings or rings of the coil is attached, and a sack having a channel through which the other winding or ring of the coil is passed.

2. A strainer comprising a band, a coil having one of its windings or rings fixed to said band, loops formed from said winding or ring, and a sack having a channel at one endthereof through which the other winding or ring on the coil is passed.

3. A strainer comprising a band having a channel at one end thereof, a coil having one of its windings or rings passed through said channel, loops formed from said winding or ring extending above said band, and a sack having a channel at its mouth through which the other winding or ring of the coil is passed.

4. A strainer comprising a band having a head providing a circumferentially extending channel eXteriorly of the band, said head havingopenings therein, a coil having one from the said winding or ring extending above the band through the openings in the head, a sack having a circuniferentially eX- tending channel at its mouth through which the other winding or ring of the coil is passed, a convoluted portion on the last mentioned winding or ring of the coil extending eXteriorly of the channel at the mouth of the sack, and an eye on one of said loops through which the convoluted portion of the winding or ring is passed. 7

6. In a strainer, a coil,,a saclrdetachably connected with one of the windings or rings of the coil, a pair of spaced rings of unequal diameters, a reticulated ring interposed be tween said pair of rings and connected therewith, and a bead on the larger of the rings in said pair of rings providing a continuous channel exteriorly thereof through which the other winding or ring of the coil is passed. r a In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature.
