ROBERT HUTSEL, F KINGSTON-UPON-HULL, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR T0 AMERICAN RADIATOR COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
CASING 0R JACKET FOR BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1917.
To al? whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT. HUTsrL, a citizen of the United States, but at present residing at Kingston-upon-Hull, 'in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caisings o1' Jackets for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to improvements in casings or jackets for boilers of that type which are designed more especially for heating water or generating steam to bc passed through pipes, radiators and the like for heating houses, institutions and buildings generally by hot water or steam heat, or for supplying hot water for domes tic purposes, or forboth of these purposes.
My invention consists of an arrangement of metal sheets, preferably sheet iron, provided with hook-like edges connected by means of slides or keys also having hooklike edges, the hook-like edges of the slides or keys engagin the hook-like edges of adjoining metal s eets, those vertical slides or keys which engage Aandconnect the meeting edges of two metal sheets at what would form a corner of the casing or jacket being provided with a cap-like top.
In the accompanyingT drawings which illustrate my invention, igure 1 represents a plan view of one corner of a square or similarly shaped boiler casing or jacket in accordance with my invention, part of the ce. on the top of the corner slide or key being broken away to allow of such corner slide or key and the hook-like edges of the metal sheets of the casing or jacket which it engages, being seen, the top of the easing or jacket being omitted, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one corner of the casing or jacket showing the corner slide or key with its cap and the slides or keys which connect the top 'to the sides or to one side and one end member of the casing or jacket, in position, Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of each of two metal sheets in the same vplane to form say one side of the casing or jacket when more than one sheet is employed in the formation of a side, and the slide or key for connecting the same. Fig. 4 r presents 5 a side view of a portion of one o4 the cornei slides or keys and its cap-like top, Fig. 5 1s a plan view, Fig 6 a v1ew on the line 1--2 o Fig. 5, and ig. 7 a front view of same.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A and B indicate a portion of each of two of the metal sheets which constitute two side members, or one side member and `one end member of the casing or jacket, a and b the vertical hook-like ed es on the inner ends and al, b1 the longitudlnal hook-like edges on the top of such sheets. C (Fig. 1) indicates hairfelt, asbestos board or like non-conducting material secured to the inner face of the metal sheets, and B indicates a portion of the metal sheet which forms, or of one of the metal sheets which form the top of the casing or jacket, d, d* being the hook-like edges of such sheet.
E and F indicate two angle-shaped metal slides or keys for connecting the top sheet or sheets I) to the side sheets A and B, e indicating the hook-like edges of the slide or key E which engage the hook-like edge d of the top sheet D and the hook-like edge al of the side sheet A, f indicating the hook-like ed es of the slide or key F which engage the ook-like ed e d1 of the said top sheet D and the hookike edge b1 of the side sheet B.
G indicates a portion of one of the vertical slides or keys which secures two metal side sheets of the casing or jacket together where they meet to form a corner, and g, g are the hook-like edges of such slide or ke which engage the hook-like ed es a and on adjoining endsof the side s eets A and B respectively.
H indicates a metal cap, preferably of cast iron with which the slide or key G is' provided, the said cap being secured to the top of the slide or key, the means by which it is secured thereto being shown in the drawings as rivets k, h, but it may be secured thereto by brazing, weldirg or any other suitable means. The cap is of angular shape and is secured to the outside of th'.` slide or key, the angular portion or ridge of the slide' or key fitting in one of the angles of the cap. The top of the cap projects over the top of the slide or key and also to a certain extent over the top of the corner of the casing or jacket, and the two side porsoV tions` of the cap project to a certain extent over the sides of the two adjoining portions of the casing or jacket, as shown at Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, such cap not only imparting a neat appearance to the top corner of the ,casing or jacket but provides a means for enabling the slide or key to be pushed into engagement and withdrawn from engagement with the hook-like edges of the metal sheets it is designed to secure, and also for covering the sharp edges of the top of the slide or key and those ends of the longitudinal slides or keys Which connect the top of the casing or jacket with the sides or the sides and ends of the casing or jacket, which terminate at the corners.
In cases where the top and the sides or the sides and ends of the casing or jacket are each built up of a plurality of metal sheets, the adjoining edges of adjoining sheets which form the top or 'the particular side or end are of hook-like formation and are connected by means of flat slides or keys J having hook-like edges j, j which engage the adjoining hook-like edges ic, lc of the sheets, as shown at Fig. 3.
I claim 1. A boiler jacket comprising a plurality of sections having vertical and'horizontal edges, and locking members engaging said edges to maintain said sections in their assembled positions, certain of said locking members being provided with end portions inclosing the corners of the sections which form the corners of the jacket, substantially as specified.
2. A boiler jacket comprising a plurality of sections having vertical and horizontal edges, and locking members engaging said edges to maintain said sections in their assembled positions, certain of said locking members being provided with end portions inclosing the meeting edges of the corners of the sections which form the corners of the jacket, substantially as specified.
3. A boiler jacket comprising a plurality of vertical and horizontal sections, a lockedges of adjacent vertical sections and hav-, Alng permanently formed end portions en.
gaging the top of the jacket to limit the sliding movement of said locking members and to hold them in position, substantially as specified.
5. A locking member for boiler jacket sections comprising a longitudinally extending body portion provided with locking means, and a permanently formed end .portion extending transversely with respect to said body portion, substantially as specified.
6. A locking member for boiler jacket sections comprising a longitudinally extending body portion consisting of angularly disposed side members provided with locking means, and a permanently formed end portion extending transversely with respect to said side members and registering with the ngle formed thereby, substantially as speci- 7. A locking member for boiler jacket sections comprising a longitudinally extending body portion consisting of angularly disposed side members provided with locking means, and a cap shaped member secured to one of the ends of said side members and having a portion extending transversely with respect to said side members and registering with the angle formed thereby, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT HUTSEL.
