Description

J. C. CONNER.
Gas'Burner.
No. 123,870. Patented Feb. 20 1872.
efaaemw 1% we 2 0v"? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE G. OONNER, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HUBBARD H. DUNOKLEE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR SUSPENDING GLASS BOWLS UNDER GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,870, dated February 20, 1872.
Be it known that I, JEssE G. CONNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in the Manner of Suspending Glass Bowls containing water, alcohol, or other transparent liquid under gas-burners, for the purpose of transmitting and intensifying light produced by the combustion of gas or any other inflammable substance.
It is well known that water, alcohol, and some other liquids will tran smit and greatly intensify light, providing the conditions required to produce such results are understood an d strictly observed. A glass bowl, hemispheric in form, filled with water, and suspended directly under a horizontal burner, a short distance below it, will transmit and intensify light in a satisfactory manner; and my invention consists in the arran gement, with a horizontal burner, of abracket or arm extending above and over the burner, on the outer end thereof, and suspended therefrom is a glass bowl supported by a cord or bail.
The following specification and accompanying drawing fully describe and explain my said improvement.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a bowl suspended under a gas-burner from a point of support above the burner in the manner invented by me; and Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, shown at right angles with that of Fig. 1.
A represents a horizontal burner projecting from the end of a gas-pipe, and extending out about one-third the distance across and above the suspended bowl. 1) represents an arm or bracket connected with the burner at the base, or with the pipe to which the burner is attached. It extends upward about three inches, and is so curved or deflected as to bring the upper end into a horizontal line directly above the burner. 0 represents an adjustable screw or plug inserted in the endof the arm or bracket 1). It extends outashort distance beyond the bracket, which extension can be increased or diminished by turning the screw or plug to the right or left. I call it an adjusting-screw or plug, as it is designed to adjust the position of the bowl under the burner. The bowl is furnished with a bail or loop, by means of which it is suspended onthe adjusting-screw 0. The screw or plug 0 is preferably made with two heads, as shown in the drawing.
What I claim as my improvement or invention, and desire to obtain Letters Patent for, 1s
I claim-- 1. In combination with the horizontal burner A, the bracket 1), projecting above the burner and over the same, and adjustable plug 0, substantiall as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The burner A and bracket 1) projecting over the same in the manner described, in connection with the water-bowl attached thereto by a supporting-cord or bail, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JESSE O. OONNER.
