UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,833, dated February 20, 1872.
Specification describing an Improvement in OanWindows, invented by WILLIAM Mc- CAULL, of Philadelphia, (Frankford P. O.,) in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.
Figure 1 represents a car-window to which my improvement has been attached, part of the casing being removed to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line am, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of the windows of railroad cars, street-cars, 850., so that they may be more convenient and reliable in use and more satisfactory in operation than when arranged in the ordinary manner; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the window-posts; B, the pulley-stiles; O, the casings; D, the windowsash; and E the window-blind. To the outer edge of each sash and blind is secured the end of an elastic cord, F, which passes up through a groove in the said side edges of the sashes and blinds. Each cord F passes over a pulley, G, let into and secured to the pulleystiles B. The elastic cords F pass down through the box or space H between the post A and pulley-stile B, and their lower ends are secured to a plate, I, the side edges of which enter grooves in the inner sides of the posts A and pulley-stiles B, several grooves being formed at different heights to receive the said plate I, so that it may be adjusted conveniently to regulate the tension of the elastic cords F.
By this construction, when a sash or blind is lowered the cords F are extended or put un der tension, so that when said sash or blind may be released the elasticity of the cords 1* connected with it may raise it again to its place. Each sash or blind is secured in place when the cords F are extended by a springbolt, J, the case K of which is secured to said sash or blind, and which is held forward against the stile B by a spring, which forces the said bolt into a hole in said stile when the sash or blind reaches the proper point.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The elastic cord .F and adjustable plate I, in combination with the box H, stile-pulley G, and the sash or blind of the window, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
WM. MOCAULL.
