SAFETY COCK.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 8. I9I5.
N UNITED srnriis r-ATENT OFFICE.
ILEo KLEINMAN, or NEW YORK, 1v. Y.
Leashes. i 1,1
To all whom t may concern: v i y f Be it known that I, Lro KLEINMAN, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certainv new and useful `Improvements in` `Safety-Cocks, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention yrelates to a safety cock or other Huid. W
The construction illustrated in thedrawings, and hereinafter described, is particularly adapted for useas a controlling valve for use in `controlling'a flow oflcombustible' e or cock for a gas stove, though obviously the same may be' employedy for otherpur- POSSS as desired. i 1
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a combined operatinglhandle and locking member formed of a single integral piece of material, preferably sheet metal stamped out in the required shape, andfurther to4 provide a separately formed cold handle grip secured tothe handle portion of the locking member by means which willy preclude its accidental detachment, and which means will at the same timefbe readily releasable to detach the handle grip when required, and which means willretain the handle ina rigid given positionwhen 1n use.
Otherobjects andaims ofthe invention, more or less specific thanthose referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out inthe course of the following description `ofl the elements, combinations,`
arrangementsof `parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and
vthe `scope `of protection `contemplated will i be indicated inthe appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be `taken as a :part of this speciiication,
and in which `I `have shown a merely preferred form ofembodi-ment `ofi the invention: i i
Figure 1 is `a` side elevational view of a gascock, a portion `thereof being shown 1n section for disclosing structural details;
` Fig. 2 is a topplan vieweof the structure illustratedr in Fig. 1; and
Figs. 3, 4, fand, 6 `are enlargedtransverse sectional views` takeurespectively Specification y'of Letterslatent.
Patented Allg'. 21, 1917..
i i Application ledSeptember 8, 1915. Serial No.49,489. l
upon the plane of lines III, IV, V and VI of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings for a detailed `description ofthe structure illustrated, the reference character L indicates the body of the gas cock. y This may be of any desired `shape or proportions and is fitted with the `a pair yof spaced lugs' 8 upstanding from theupper end of the plug 1, and being piv* `otallyconnected thereto by a pivot pin 9 extendingfthrough said lugs and through the body portion 5.
The locking portion 6` depends from the body portion 5, partly within a groove 1() formed in theplug 1, and is adapted, when the plug is closed, to have its lower end lengaging within the slot 4 formed in the body L,` ,and when thevalve is open, to have its lower end ride freely over the-upper) an nularV edge surface of the body L.
The 'handle portion 7 projects substantially horizontally from the body portion 15 and is, preferably tapered toward its outer yend, the extreme end portion being threaded, as atA 11, to receive a binding nut 12.
Where the handle portion 7 joins the body `portion 5, a pair of shoulders 18 are providedfacing toward the Athreaded portion l11.
The handle grip I-I is preferablyr formed of wood turned to proper contour and formed with la central bore 14 extending I `throughout the length thereof, and the walls.
thereof being normally of circular, formation and opposite sides thereof being normallyl parallel ,throughoutl their.` length,
that is, such a bore as can be made by an ,ordinary revolving` bit. TheA diameter .of
`the `bore is made ofthe `same measurement ioo being illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawingsy The taper of the stem portion 7 enables ready and convenient insertion yof the smaller end thereof into theboie of the Vhandle grip, and the increasing width of said portion 7, between the lines V and IV, `will f be accommodated, when the VAhandle grip is forced toward the shoulders 13, bythe ina-y terial of the' handle gripbeing compressed Lao " themenib'er Gr is rigid in all its parts, that to form grooves 15 at opposite sides of the bore for receiving` the increasing width of the portion 7, as indicated in Fig. 4,. 'I hey depending therefrom spaced from the part stemv portion? is rectangular in cross section and the longitudinal corners thereof form biting edgesy for readily enteringthe material ofthe handleJ grip. Of course,
other longitudinally extending biting edges might .be provided, if found necessary. The
,manner Aof forming 'the grooves 15 willpro-v duce a tight fit of the handle grip upon. ther portionf? andthe presence of the grooves grip to rotatey uponftheportion 7.
In order to further retain the handle grip against rotation, and at the same time im-1 prove` the appearance of the device, ,affere rule 16 is fittedk over the end of the*y handle grip, and this isformed with a rectangular opening l12' of just the proper sizeto fit snugly about the portion 7 at the shoulders 13. The .ferrule itselfniay be retained againstrotationon the handle grip by any suitable means, for instance by the struck in portions 18 engaging within the ymaterial of the handle grip.
In order toi retain the handle grip Tin place v upon the portion 7. the bore thereof-is en:- lar-ged yat ,itsgouter end to provide an an'- nular shoulder 19 against which-portions of they clamp nut 12 engage to force the handle grip to position with the -ferrule 17 against the shoulders l13. f i i In order to support. the outer endof the 'handle grip, where the walls of the bore 111 are spaced from the vsmaller outer end of the portion 7, asfshown iniFig. 6, the clamp nut 12 is provided with an extension 2O closely fitting between the walls of the bore. This` extensionmay be tapered, as indicated,.if
desired, so as to facilitate its introduction into 4the kbore and insure closer andk more rigidengagement with the walls of the bore.
The clamp nut 12v is entirely received within lthe bore of the handle :grip so that likelihood of Iaccidental rotation thereof by contact with Vthe hand' of an operator is avoided. f v 1l v It y*will be 'apparent' from the above that it maybe stamped from arsingle piece of sheet inetaland therefore be cheap to Inanu` surface portion of the body 5 of the kmember v(Sito swing the member Gr normally so that the locking part 6 thereof will enter the slot 4 in the body L.,
The ybody 5 is alsoformedfwitha-lug 22 6 and arranged rfor'engaging Vagainst the upper surfacey of the'plug 1-for positively limitingthe movement of the member Gr when the part 6 is in a position free of the slot 4. The spring 21v is arrangedbetween the parts 6 vand 22 and is concealed' from view on two sides thereby while the lugs 8 .concealit from ythe other two sides. will greatly resist tendencyl of the handle Asniany changes couldbe made in this construction without departing from the` scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter 'contained in the above construction or shown in the accompanying I 'claim as `new and desire Letters Patent,- is:
1. In aV device of the class described, the combination with a body portion having a .rotary valve therein rotatable into twopositwo positions comprising a'v member formed with a main part `disposed between said lugs and being pivotally connected thereto,
