Be it known thatI, CHARLES M.-Pnooron, a citizen of the United States, residing at;
Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michr gan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gongs, and declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. 1

.As with the usual electricbell, the gong is generally mounted on a base 1 of any ap-- proved typewhich also carries an electromagnet within a casino 2, and having the usualballhammer 3 on the end of the armature adapted to strike the gong. In the manufacture of electric bells of the same size it is desirable that the gongs be productive of the same volume of sound but of divergent tone whereby several contiguous signal bells may be distinguished one from the other. The gong 4 here shown is substantially of the shape of a ballhaving a slot 5 upon one side thereof extending to the axis of the gong. and terminating upon both the upper and lower sidesxin an enlarged aperture 6, 6. To supportthe saidgong, a
post 7 is provided secured in any approved manner to the base 1 extending through one of the apertures 6 and preferably into an aperture in a lug8 formed upon the interior of'the, bell and provided with an aperture in alinement with the said apertures6,6, into which an end of the post extends. (A screw ,9 is provided extending through the aperture in the lug 8 and into a threaded socket in the post.

order to produce the greatest resonance and by providing the interiorly projecting lug the gong may be mounted centrally on the portion of the base to which it is attached, providing a bell of neat appearance and of peculiar tone.
Having thus briefly described my invention, and its utility, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A gong comprising a substantially ball shaped metal shell having a slot on one side terminating in enlarged apertures on opposite sidesof the bell in axial alinement, and a lug upon the interior of the shell having an aperture in alinement with said apertures in the shell.
2. A gong for electric bells and the like consisting of a metal shell having a slot upon one side thereof terminating in enlarged apertures centrally upon opposite sides of the bell, and a lug formed integrally with said shell having an aperture in axial alinement with said apertures in the shell.
3. A gong for electric bells and the like consisting of a. substantially ball shaped metal shell having a slot upon one side thereof terminating in enlarged apertures centrally upon oppositeflsides of the shell, a
lug formed integrally therewith extending into the interior of the shell and having aperture in alinement with said apertures in the shell, and a post for supporting said gong extending into the shell through one of said apertures.
4. In a device of the character described, I a substantially ball shaped gong having a slot in one side, and a lug for supporting the gong extending from the opposite side of thewinterior thereof and integrally formed therewith.
