Description

H. E. CAMPBELL,
WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.
APPLICATION HLED APR. 6. 1917- Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
HARRY E. CAMPBELL,
on NEW YORK, N. Y.
wmnow cons'rnucrro'n.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application filed April 6, 1917. Serial No. 160,264.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in \Nindowv Constructions, of which the following is a specification. v
The invention relates to window construction, and more particularly to the combina tion of the sill and jambs of a metal windowframe with the wall wherein the window opening is made. i Y
In U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,222,357, granted to me April 10, 1917, I have disclosed a metal window-frame comprising a sill, two tubular jambs or side members thereon, and a lintel carried by said jambs said parts being suitably connected. The jambs are formed of united metal plates. The outer jamb plates in the structure of said patent are bent over laterally and outwardly, and the sill is laterally-extended to carry said plates. These outer jamb plates abut against the edge of the window opening in the wall, so that the front and rear faces are overlapped by the laterall bent over portions of said jamb plates. y my present construction I do away with said laterally bent over portions, thus saving the metal of the jamb, and of the sill below, and I place the jamb in a recess formed in the vertical side of the window opening. The sill closes the bottom of said recess, and upon said sill the hollow jamb is seated. Integral with the sill is a stool, upon which is seated the portion of the wall which is immediately in rear of said recess.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a horizontal section of the wall of one of the two hollow jambs and the sill on the line 01:, m of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line y, 3 of Fig. 1. I
Similar letters and numbers of reference indicate like parts.
One of the hollow metaljambs is shown at A. The sill, generally indicated at B, may be considered as formed of two parts, namely: the front portion 1which extends from the front edge at a to a line I) just in rear of the jamb A-and the stool 2 which extends rearwardly from the line b to the rear edge 0. The said parts 1, 2 are made integral in a single casting. In the front part 1 is the usual recess 4, the bottom portion of which is downwardly and outwardly inclined. The jamb A is seated upon said part 1, and at its lower end is received in positioning lugs 5.
The building wall on one side of the window opening is shown at (J. In said wall I make a vertical recess, in which is seated the jamb A, so that the bottom end of said recess is closed by the sill.; By. reason of the seating of the jamb in the wall recess, a front portion of the wall C overlaps the front side of the jamb, as shown at 6, and a rear portion of said wall overlaps the rear side of the jamb, as shown at 7. The end 8'of the front portion of the sill abuts against the front portion 6. The rear' portion 7 rests upon thestool 2 of sill B, and is built thereon after said sill is in place upon the masonry below the window opening. By this construction I secure joints between the jamb A and wall C which are impermeable to drafts-or moisture, and especially wide joints between the portion 7 of the wall and the stool 2. Said stool 2 extends beyond the inner face of the masonry, and has a down wardly extending bracket flange 9 which bears against said face below the window opening. The groove 10 in the sill receives any drainage from the jamb, and delivers.
the same to the front recess 4.
' I claim:
1. In combination with a Wall having a window opening, said opening having a recess in its vertical side, a sill closing the bottom of said recess, and a hollow metal jamb received in said recess and seated on said sill.
2. A structure as specified in-claim 1, in combination with a stool integral with said sill, the portion of said wall immediately in rear of said recess being seated upon said stool.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY E. CAMPBELL. Witnesses:
GERTRUDE T. Poem, MAY T. MCGARRY.
