C. B. HEIM. RUG HEATER APPLICATION HLED MAR. 8. I917- Patented Aug. 14, 1917.

CHARLES B. HEIM, or ivuincqtmnriiiva.
RUG-BEATER.
To all whom it may concern:
vBe it known that I, CHARLES B. I-IEIM, a. citizen of the United'State's, and a resident of Marco, county of Greene, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Rug-Beater; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,-and exact description thereof,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichli-ke letters refer to like parts.
' This invention relates to a novel means for beating rugs in cleaning them. As is well known the most satisfactory way to clean rings or carpets and the like is to beat the dust and dirt out of thenn Heretofore it has been necessary to apply manual strength and energy to beat rugs, which is very tiring.
' The main feature of this invention is the construction of a mechanical device for operating a heater whereby the application of manual strength and energy is minimized. This is accomplished by me'ansof using a spring in connection with the heater. to cause it to suddenly engage the rugs with suflicient force to drive the dust and dirt therefrom, and a manually operated lever for raising the beater to' striking position against thetension of the springs. The use of a lever greatly minimizes the force and energy necessary to operate the device;
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the followi g. description and claims.
Figii're 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the beater in its lower position. Fig. 2 is a side elevationshowing the beater in elevated position. Fig. 3 is a cross 40 section taken on the line 33 of Fig.1. Fig. tie the same as "Fig. 3 with the beater released. Fig. 5 ;is a cross section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3 showing an enlarged view thereof.
In the drawing there is'shown a rug beat- 1 ing mechanism having an upright standard 10 with the handle on theupper end thereof adapted to be grasped and held by the operator, and having a foot piece 11 secured to the bottom thereof and extending outwardly by means of which the operator" may retain the standard in its upright position and prevent it moving when operated by means of placing his foot thereon; At the end or toe of the foot piece 11 there is pivoted a. lever 12 which extends rearwardly therefrom position as shown in Fig. 2.
Specification. of Letters Patent. P aitlited Aug 14, 1917. i Application filed March 8, 191 7. Ser'ialxNop15332430' I i past the standardand has secured atv its other end a rug beater 13 of the ordinary construction and typein commonuse. The lever 12 has integral therewith an arm 13 which extends upwardly and over said lever in the same plane therewith, but which is broken off near the standard. The lever 12 is guided in its movement by a guard iron 15 which is secured at both ends to the bottom to the standard: and slightly raised therefrom so that the lever 12 and arm 14 may extend between said guard and said standard,- thereby forminga guide in which they may reciprocate back and forth about the pivot point--1-6; of the lever. There is a spiral spring 17 secured at one end to the side of thestandard and at the other end to the arm 14 above the pivot point 16, whichits other-end a wire rod 20 which extends downwardly through an eyelet, 21 which is secured to the 'standardand is provided at its'other end with an inwardly bent portion 22 whichforms a catch or latch Said inwardly bent portion or latch is in a position toslide longitudinally in a groove 23 in theside of the standard so as to guide it in its operation, and is so constructed that. in
its downward movement it will slide over the arm 14' and in its upper movement will engage said arm'and shownfin Fig; 2. I
pull it upwardly as In the operation of the device the" operator grasps'the upper handle in the standard and places his foot on the foot piece 11 and then tal'ies hold of the handle of the lever 18 and forces it upwardly thereby causing the rod 20l-to be forced downwardly whereby the latch 22 will pass over-the 'arm'l4: in positionto engage it as shown in Fig. 1.
Then the operator pulls-downwardly on the lever thereby causing the latch to engage the arm and pull it upwardly until it is in the Whenthe arm, and therefore, the beater is elevated to its highest position the armis in a position to be disengaged by-the latch and the tension on the spring '17 will cause the beater to be "brought downwardly with the force and'impetus ordinarily applied in rug beating.
The invention claimed is:
1. A rug beater including a beating element, means for imparting a downward movement to said element, a pivoted hand lever and means carried by said hand lever having a latch for intermittently engaging and raising said element to operative position, the portion of the beating element engaged between the latch'being constructed to move out of the path of movement of the latch when the heating element is raised to a certain distance.
2. A rug beater including a beating element, a spring for imparting a downward movemei'it to said element, and a hand lever and means pivoted to said hand lever having a latch for raising said element to operative position against the tension of said spring, the portion of the beating element engaged between the latch being constructed to move out of the path of movement of the latch when the heating element is raised to a certain distance.
3. A rug beater including a beating element, a standard, a lever to which said element is secured, said lever being pivoted to 2 said standard, means on said standard for imparting a downward movement to said lever and element, a hand lever pivoted on said standard and means carried by said lever having a latch for raising said element to operative position, the portion of the beating element engaged between the latch be ing constructed to move out of the path of movement of the latch when the beating element is raised to a certain distance.
4. A rug beater including a standard, having a projection on the lower end thereof, a heating element pivoted to said projection, a spring on said standard for imparting a downward movement to said element, a hand leverfulcrumed to said standard, and means connected with one end of said hand lever having a latching means for raising said element to operative position, the portion of the beating element engaged between the latch being constructed to move out of the path of movement of the latch when the heating element is raised to a certain distance.
5. A rug beater including a standard having a projection on the lower end thereof, a lever pivoted at one end to the end of said projection and having a beating element secured on the other end thereof, said lever having an arm integral therewith, a spring connecting said arm to said standard for imparting the downward movement to said element, a hand lever fulcrumed to the upper portion of said standard, and a rod pivoted to one end of said hand lever and extending downwardly in position to engage Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cent secured to said arm and to said standard, for
imparting a downward movement to said element, a hand lever fulcrumed to the up per portion of said standard and a rod pivoted to the end of said hand lever and extending downwardly, said rod having alatch on the lower end thereof in position to engage the end of said arm whereby said arm may be pulled upwardly for raising said element to operative position, the portion of .the heating element engaged between the latch being constructed to move out of the path of movement of the latch when the heating element is raised to a certain dis tance, so that the tension of said spring will force said element downwardly.
' 7. A rug beater including a standard having a projection on the lower end thereof, a lever pivoted to the end of said projection and having an upwardly extending arm integral therewith, a beating element rigidly mounted on the end of said lever, a spring secured to said arm and to said standard, for imparting a downward movement to said element, a hand lever fulcrumed to the upper portion of said standard and a rod pivoted to the end of said hand lever and extending downwardly, said rod having a latch on the lower end thereof in position to engage the end of said arm whereby said arm may be pulled upwardly for raising said element to operative position, the por-' tion of the beating element engaged between the latch being constructed to move out of the path of movement of the latch when the beating element is raised to a certain distance, so that the tension of said spring will force said element downwardly, and a guard secured to the lower end of said standard for retaining said arm and rod in operative position.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
