Specification of Letter: r mit. Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
Application filed January as, 1017. Serial a. 113,001.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, MATH WAINOLA residing at New York, in thecounty of ew York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, ofv
which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in tools.
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to produce a tool comprising a comparatively straight member havin an arched lateral xtension at one of its en s,the inner edge of which being notched, to further provide the straight member, adjacent its said end with a pivoted jaw and to arrange withinthe said member means, op-
erative exteriorly thereof for swinging and retaining the jaw toward or awa rom the notched end of the straight mem r, whereby objects of various sizes may be secured and operated upon by the jaw and the notched arched member. 1
With the above and other objects in" view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and fall- .in within the scope of the appended claims.
n the drawing:
Figure 1 is' an ed e elevation of a tool constructed in accor ance with this invention, parts being broken away and parts beingzshown in section,
ig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same.
The tool is broadly indicated by the numeral 1 and includes a head 2, of steel or manner to provide the'pounding end-3 and the claw 4, while the handle 5 has one of its ends received in the usual socket in the head between the pounding end and claw. The head 2 at the outer end thereof is centrally formed with a transverse notch, and the side walls, provided by the said notch are preferably beveled, it being understood that the notch extends through the socket of the head, and consequently through one end of the handle 5. The claw 4-, upon the inner face thereof, is notched transversely to provide a plurality of steps 6.
Thehandle 5, at the portion thereof received in the socket of the head ma be, for
a determined length, slotted or bi rcated,
or otherwise the tool may be provided with a transverse pocket 7 within which is arranged a flat segmental member 8. This member 8 has its outer and reduced end notched, as at 9, and is ivoted, as at 10, inward of the notch. T e notch 9 is arranged opposite the notch in the head 2, heretofore referred to, and the side walls provided by. the notch 9 may be sharpened and so it will be apparent that when the segment 8 is swung u on its ivot 10 it w1l move over the en walls 0 the notch in the hammer head, and consequently a w1re or the like arranged g in the alining notches will be severed. The member 8 has its edge disposed opposite the stepped face of the claw 4 formed with transverse teeth or serrations 11, and the wider end of the said member 8 is rounded, being struck coneentrically from its pivot 10 and provided with transversely arranged teeth 12. The numeral 13* designates a shaft journaled in suitable hearings in the handle and provided with gear teeth 14 and with a worm 15; the latter engaging with the teeth 12 of the member 8. The ear teeth aree aged b a worm16 forme upon one end 0 g a sha 17 that asses through a central opening in the han le. This shaft is journaled in suitable bearings that prevent the longitudinal movement thereof, and the end of the said with a square or rectangular opening to receive the square or rectangular portion 18 of the shaft, while the threaded end of the said shaft is engaged by a wing nut 20.
The side or flanfge 19 of the operating member 20 is pre erably milled to. materially aid the operator in grip ing the member and in turning the sai shaft which through the medium of the worm thereon intermeshing with the gear teeth on the short shaft 13 revolves the said shaft, causing the worm 15 which engages with the teeth of the member 8 to turn t e said member upon its pivot, to bring the roughened or serrated edge of the member 8 toward or away from the stepped face of the claw.
The claw, it will be noted, provides the stameshing parts which actuate the movable or swinging jaw is such as to effectively hold the jaw in its adjusted position, and to prevent the accidental'rotation of the shaft by the operating member 20, the wing nut 21 maybe screwed tight against the cap causing the said cap to bin on the end of the handle.
The operation and advantages of the device will. it is thought, be apparent without further description, and it is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described a satisfactory embodiment of the improvement as it now appears to me, changes in size, proportion, etc., as fall within the sec e of the appended claims, may be made i desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a comparatively ment journaled in the said member, and c0- acting with the teeth of the jaw, and an operating element for the said notched element. including a head arranged at the end of the member opposite that provided with the lateral extension.
2. In combination with a comparatively straight member having one of its ends formed with an arched lateral extension having the inner face thereof notched, and the said member, opposite the said extension being slotted, longitudinally, a jaw member pivoted in thevsaid slot having a serrated side and a toothed edge, and the said edge being disposed concentric of the pivot of the said jaw, a shaft 'ournaled in the member, said shaft. being ormed with a worm engaging with the teeth of the 'aw, gear teeth upon the shaft to one side 0 the worm, an operating member extending centrally through the referred to straight member and being journaled therein, a worm upon the operating member co-engagin with the gear teeth of the shaft, and a dis' shaped cap member secured to the operating member and arranged to contact with the end of the said straight member.
In testimony whereof I, aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WAINOLA.
