DANIEL COLLINS, OF ZANESFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILLSTONE BALANCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,678, dated February 13, 1872.
. Specification describing a certain Improved Millstone Balance invented by DANIEL GOL- LINS, of Zanesfield, in the county of Logan, Ohio. I
My invention relates to adjustable and variable weights for application to the periphcries of mi1lstone runners, to balance the same on their spindles; and the improvement consists in a peculiar construction of the same,
facilitating their application, removal, and variation. v
Figure l is an elevation of a run of millstones provided with my improved balance. Fig.2is a perspective of the balance detached.
In carrying out my invention I employ a box, A, of sheet metal or other suitable material, with an opening, Z, through which to introduce andrcmove shot or other small weights,
socket in the dog D. The boxAis construct.
ed with a sleeve, 00, to receive the rod B, and is adapted to occupy the space between it and the stone, when in position, as, represented. A slide, G, provided with a set-screw, H, supports the box A at any desired height on the rod B.
To apply the balance, the dog D is set at about the proper point, and secured by the set-screw F, and the nut E turned back until the spurs w of the dogs 0 and D can be slipped over the edges of the hoops of the runner. The nut is then tightened up, and the spurs w forced in behind the said hoops'or bands, when the whole is securely attached. The box A may then be adjusted by means of the slide G and set-screw H, and weights intro duced until the stone runs properly.
To remove the balance at any time it is only necessary to turn back the nut E. The rod B being made long enough for the deepest runners, the same balance may be applied with equal facility to any size of stones.
I am aware that variable weights have been used for the purpose contemplated in this invention, and that weights have been attached to the peripheries of millstones by different clamps. 1
What I claim in this my invention, is
The improved millstone balance, herein described, composed of the weight-box A constructed with mouth 2 and sleeve 00, the rod B with screw-end y, the adjustable dog D, adjustable support Gr, loose top-dog O, and clamping nut E, constructed and arranged substantially as shown, for the purpose set forth.
DANIEL COLLINS.
