UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL TEAGUE, OF NEVTON, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR DRESSING MILLSTONES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,511, dated April 5, 1859.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SAMUEL TEAGUE, of the town of Newton, county of Miami, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use ful Machine for Dressing Mill and other Stones; and I do hereby declare thatl the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure l is a` transverse section of the cylinder B, through one of the cams, together with the corresponding section of one ot the levers, Z Z, and pick a. Fig. 2 a perspective view of the sliding frame containing the machinery with the case or box removed, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the box M M M, in which the sliding frame A A A moves and also the front end of said frame itself, together with the ends of the levers ZZ, ZZ, ZZ, the springs g, g, g, for giving force to the blows of the picks and the pins K K K for regulating' the tension of the springs. The machine is designed to be used in fac ing, furrowing, and picking, millstones, and dressing stone generally with facility; thus avoiding the tedious and disagreeable operation of hand work, and consists of a number of picks av a a a secured upon levers L Z Z Z Fig. 2 playing vertically upon a fulcrum seen at l?, Fig. l, and operate by a cylinder B; all of which are arranged in a suitable frame A A A. Fig. 2 which slides horizontally in a box, or case, carrying` its machinery with it; the sliding movement is given by means of a screw; s s or other equivalent device; said screw having its journal in the outer frame. or box, and its nut attached to the sliding frame; also the levers have attached to each, a spring' ot' india rubber or other suitable material for the purpose of adding torce to the blows ot the picks; the springs may be tightened to regulate the force of the blows, by pins inserted into a cross bar at the bottom of the frame. prevent any of the picks from cutting too deep before the others have finished their work, hooks are suspended from the upper cross bar O A, for the purpose of holding them up and out of action while the remaining picks continue their work. An iron rod serves as a fulcrum for the levers to play upon by passing it transversely through the frame A A A and placing upon it wooden, or other suitable collars to retain said levers in their places.

The screws, n n n, at ends of the braces 7' f serve to adjust the picks perpendicularly and the round tenons admit of turning them in a vertical plane, in order to adjust the cutting edges to the surface to be. wrought.
To operate the machine it is placed upon the stone to be wrought and motion given to the picks by turning the cylinder B by means of the crank L or otherwise, meanwhile driving the picks forward as the work progresses by means of the screw s s turned by the hand wheel H.
