RETENTION DEVICE FOR WINDOW-:PANES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, THEODORE F. OncrIsLn and AUGUsr D. KUMrr, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retention Devices for lVindow-Panes, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention relates to a retention device for window panes and consists of two members, each of which is made of sheet metal, namely, an anchorage member which is secured between the sash bar and the window pane and which is provided with an angularly projecting tongue; and a sliding clip member bent to grip the edge of the pane and provided with reception slots for the tongue of the anchorage member. By sliding the clip toward the an chorage member the inclination of the tongue compels the firm engagement of the clip with the pane. hen the proper point has been reached the clip is permanently fastened in place by turning over the projecting end of the tongue.

According to our invention it is con venient to pair anchorage members of two retention devices on opposite sides of a sash bar, each partially protruding through a common slot and each forming a resistance point for its fellow.

These devices may be used as shown, or they may be covered by the putty or cement strip by which panes are ordinarily made fast to a sash bar.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I, is a plan view, showing two panes attached to a common sash bar by our devices.

Referring to the drawings, the contiguous panes 1, 1, rest upon the common sash bar 2. This sash bar is pierced by a slotted aperture 3.

Each fastening device comprises an anchorage member and a sliding clip.

The anchorage member includes a base 5, one edge of which is capable of insertion between the sash and the edge of the Specification of Letters Patent.

pane. The opposite edge of this base is, in part at least, bent over to form a shoulder 6, which passes through the slotted aperture 3, of the sash bar. The edge of the shoulder 6, after passing through the aperture is turned up against the side of the sash bar, as seen at 7. From one side of the base of the anchorage member protrudes the inclined tongue 8.

As already stated, we prefer to secure two anchorage members to one of the slots 3, one on each side of the sash bar To this end the shoulders 6, of each of the two bases are arranged in complementary relation to each other passing in opposite directions through the slot, and together occupying the whole length of said slot 3, the turned up extremity 7 of each lying between the edge of the sash bar and the base of the other.

' The clip member 10, has lugs 11, 11, which project between the sash bar and the edge of the pane, and a turned out flap 12, which rests upon the flat side of the pane, whereby these parts enable it to firmly grip the corner of the pane. The center of the clip is stamped up to form a strap 13, bounded by slots which are adapted to receive the tongue of the anchorage piece. This strap is inclined to correspond to the inclination of the tongue.

In operation the anchorage members are firmly secured in place, one on either side of one of the slots 3, piercing the sash bar 2. The clip corresponding to each anchorage member is then inserted in place and wedged along the tongue of the anchorage member until it is as close to it as it can be pushed, in which position firm pressure is exerted by the clip to hold the pane in place against the sash bar. In this position the members are secured in permanent relation to each other by turning back the free end of the tongue as best seen in Fig. II, of the drawings. The device may then be permanently secured in place and sealed by a putty or cement strip covering the sides of the sash bar.

Having thus described our invention, we claim:

1. A fastening device for window panes, consisting of the combination of an anchorage member provided with means for securing it to a sash bar and with an inclined projecting tongue; and a clip provided with Patented Aug. 14, 1917,

means for gripping the pane and with a strap beneath which is received the inclined tongue of the anchorage member.

2. A device for securing panes to a sash bar, including in combination with a pierced sash bar and adjacent panes; sheet metal anchorage members having inclined tongues, edges received between the sash bar and the pane, and edges passing through the aperture of the sash bar: and sheet metal slotted clips, the slots of which receive the inclined tongue of an anchorage member, and which clips are also provided with means for gripping the edge of a pane.

3. A device for securing panes to sash bars, which comprises paired anchorage members one on either side of a pierced sash bar, with complementary portions passing in opposite directions through the aperture of the sash bar and which are thereby firmly held in relation to each other, inclined tongues projecting from said anchorage members, and sliding clips capable of engaging the inclined tongue of an anchorage piece and also of engaging the edge of a pane.
