PETER J. BORGER, OF CINCINNATI, onro.
|MPROVEMENT.IN SAFETY DEVICES FOR HOISTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,672, dated February 13, 1872.
I, PETER J. BORGER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improved Safety Device for Hoists, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
General Description with Reference to the Drawing.
Figure l is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a partial section of my improved hoisting apparatus, the parts being in their proper relative positions for ordinary use. Figs. 3 and 4 show the same parts in the positions they assume when the rope becomesslackened by the accidental stoppage of the descending platform or other cause.
My driving-pulley A, instead of being keyed fast to the shaft B, revolves loosely upon it, except as it is connected thereto by a springpawl, O, which, engaging in a ratchet-wheel, 1), that is fast to said shaft, compels the rotation of the shaft and its attached winding-cylinder E when revolved in direction of the arrow, Figs. 1 and 2, as in the act of elevating the platform. When revolved in the contrary direction, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) the weight of the platform, communicated through the rope G, causes the, ratchet D to react against thepawl, so as to keep. these two members in gear. H is a gravitating pawl pivoted at h to the frame or other stationary object; and, when liberated by the slackening of the rope, engaging in a ratchet-wheel, I, attached to the shaft B or to the winding-cylinder E, and at all other times held out of gear with said wheel in consequence of its sheave J resting against the rope G.
The instant that the rope G becomes slack-' ened from detention of the descending platform or other cause the gravitating pawl H drops into the ratchet-wheel J and instantly arrests the motion of the shaft B and its attachments, including the winding-cylinder E, and thereby prevents the uncoilin g of the rope.
In place of the driving-pulley A I may employ a cog-wheel.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The combination of the loose driving-pulley or wheel A attached to shaft B by springpawl O and ratchet D, and the drum E and ratchet-wheel I keyed on said shaft with the gravitating pawl H, the whole constructed and arranged as herein shown and described, for the purposes specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
PETER J. BORGER. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, JAMES H. LAYMAN.
