To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BALDWIN, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Power-Hoist, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved powerhoist for raising buckets, elevator-cages, &c., out of wells, shafts of mines, &c.
The invention consists in the combination, with a hoistingdrum, of a shaft adapted to be revolved by a draft-animal, or by hand or steam power, and provided with means for revolving the said drum from the said shaft and disconnecting the drum from the said shaft, when necessary.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a hoisting-drum. either keyed or loosely mounted on a shaft, of a brake-pulley loosely mounted on or keyed to the same shaft, and provided with clutching devices for automatically engaging it with the drum, and in the construction of the said clutching devices and other parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved power-hoist. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional elevation of the winding-drum. Fig. a is an inside view of the brake-wheel. Fig. 5 is an outside view of the end disk of the drum with which the brake-pawls engage.
A vertical shaft, A, is journaled in a suitable standard, and on its upper end a beam, 13*, is held, which is provided at its free end with a single-tree for attaching a horse to the said beam, and on the lower end of the shaft A a beveled cog-wheel, A, is mounted, which engages with a beveled pinion, B, mounted on a shaft, B, suitablyjournaled in the baseframe G of the power-hoist.

mounted,which is adapted to engage with the outer surface of the head E ofa winding-drum,
F, the said outer surface .of the head E being a friction-surface, or with a bevel gear-wheel on the end of the shaft N. The shaft-B is held to revolve in an eccentric at one end of a lever, G, pivoted on the base-frame, and having its opposite end connected with an upright lever, H, having a locking device, H, whereby, by swinging the lever H laterally in one direction or the other, the opposite end of the lever G will be swung in the reverse direction, and thereby the paper friction or cog wheel D will be brought in contact with or 6 5 moved from the frictionsu rface ofthe head Eor cog-wheel. The hoisting-rope J is wound on the drum F, and passes over apulley, K, on the top of a tripod-frame, L, or other suitable frame, and on the free end of the ropeJ the bucket M or other suitable hoisting box, cage, or bucket is secured. The head 0 of the drum is provided inits outer surface with an annular groove, 0, forming an annular shoulder, (1.. Adjacent to the outer surface of the head 0 a brake-w heel, P, is keyed to or loosely mounted on the shaft N. and is surrounded by a brakeband, Q, the ends of which are secured to a brake-lever, Q, provided with a suitable locking device for looking it in position on the notched semicircle I, secured on the base. On the inner sides of the spokes of the brakewheel]? a flat ring or plate, 1?, is secured, which is provided on its inner side with a'series of projections, Z), in the point of each of which a recess, (1, is formed, the said recesses being adapted to receive the inner ends of on loose pawls It, resting against the plate P, and adapted to swing between studs or pins 9, projecting from the plate P, the outer ends of the said pawls being made convex. When the brake-wheel is placed on the shaft N and adjacent to the head 0 of the drum, the outer edges of the pawls It will be adjacent to the annular shoulder a, formed in the outer surface of the head 0.
The operation is as follows: The shaft is reroo volved, either by means of the friction-wheel D or by means of a pinion used in place of the same, in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the rope J is wound on the drum, and the bucket is raised. If the bucket is to be lowered, it is only necessary to disengage the friction-wheel D or the cog-wheel, which is to be disengaged by a clutch from the drum. The drum will then be free to revolve, but will be stopped instantly by the action of the loose pawls in the brake-wheel, the brake being kept set or fixed while hoisting. The bucket can then be lowered by releasing the brake, thereby allowing the rope to unwind. The object is to stop the bucket quickly without touching the brake-lever, the brake being always on only when released inlowering the bucket. The brake-lever Q is always drawn down when hoisting, so as to press the brake Qfirmly on the rim of the brake-wheel P. The weight of the bucket acting on the rope will have the tendency to turn the drum in the inverse direction of the arrow a; but such movement of the drum is at all times prevented by the pawls B, which engage the rim instantly without lost motion. The said pawls are of such length that when they stand radially to the shaft N they cannot fit in between the projections b and the shoulders a, and as the on Winding of the rope turns the brake-pulley in the inverse direction of the arrow a, and tends to swing the pawls into the radial position,
it is evident that they will be jammed between the projections band the shoulder a, thnslock ing the head 0 of the drum securely on the brake-wheel P, which in turn is held by the brake-band. The drum can thus be fully controlled by means of the said brake-band, and the bucket can be held at any desired height, and can easily be lowered at will. The pins 9 g prevent. the pawls from swinging too far in either direction. I
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desiretoseoureby Letters Patent 1. In a power-hoist, the combination, with a drum, ofthe'friction or cog wheel D, adapted to be engaged with one end of the drum, the shaft B, on which thefriction or cog wheel D is mounted, means for revolving the shaft B, and means for moving the shaft B in such a manner as to engage the friction-wheel or cog-Wheel, with the end of the drum or cog wheel on'the end of the shaft N, or disengage the friction-wheel or cog-wheel from the drum, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. Ina power-hoist, the combination, with a drum,of the shaft A, adapted to be revolved by means of any suitable power, means for communicating the rotary motion from the shaft A to the drum F, and means for connecting or disconnecting the said means with or from the drum F, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a hoisting-drum mounted loosely or keyed on a shaft, of a brakepulley mounted loosely or keyed on the same shaft, and provided with a brake-band, and pawls held on the brake-pulley, and adapted to engage with one head of the hoisting-drum, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with a hoisting-drum mounted loosely or keyed on a shaft, of a brake-pulley mounted-loosely or keyed on the same shaft, and surrounded by a brake-band, which brake-pulley is provided with a series ot'projections, b, in the points of which recesses d are formed for holding the inner ends of loose pawls B, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a hoisting-drum provided in the outer surface of one head with an annular shoulder, of a brake-pulley on the shaft, the plate P,secured on the inner side of the said brake-pulley, and provided with projections I), having notches cl for receiving the inner ends of loose pawls B, resting against the plate P, and of a brake-bandsurrounding the brake pulley, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The combination, with a hoisting-drum having an annular shoulder formed in the outer surface of one of its heads, of the brake-pulley P, theplate P, secured on the same, and
provided with projections I), having notches or recesses d, the pins g, the pawls B, held loosely on the brake-wheel, and having convex outer ends, and of a brake-band surrounding the pulley, substantially as herein shown and described.
