SAFETY-8T0 P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 635,222, dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed June 1, 1899. $erial1l'o. 719,034. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA BAGGALEY, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Stop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
'The object of my invention is to provide a simple means for preventing a reverse movement of hoisting-engines, particularly when.
an engine is loaded, the device employed being readily and economically attached to any type of hoisting-engine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a reversing-check which is automatically applied and which will render the overhaul easier and will dispense with the necessity of a weight upon the hoisting-rope, enabling the drum or drums to turn freely in overhauling, the only retarding action being due to their friction upon their shafts.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is side elevation of a portion of a hoisting-engine, illustrating the application of the improvement thereto; and Fig.2 is a side elevation of a portion of the inner face of the engine-frame and a transverse section through the drive-shaft of the engine.
The hoisting-engine A may be of any approved type and is shown as provided with two drums B and B. Each drum is provided with the usual lever 0, adapted to carry the 40 drums out of engagement with the driving- 4 of motion of the said wheel.
gear driven from the drive-shaft D of the engine, upon which drive-shaft the usual crankwheel E is secured.
The main object of this invention is to provide a means for dispensing with the footbrakes, thereby enabling the attendant of the engine to control the drums with the hands only. To that end the crank-wheel E is provided with a series of ratchet-teeth 10, which teeth may be on the periphery, as illustrated, or adjacent to the periphery. The'teeth incline in a reverse direction to the direction A pawl 11 is mounted upon theside 13 of the engine-frame or on any convenient fixed support, and said pawl is adapted for engagement with the ratch et-teeth 10 on the crank-wheel. A spring 14 is usually loosely coiled around the driveshaft D, and the free end of the said spring is carried in direction of the pawl l1,as shown in Fig. 2, the spring passing between guide-pins 15, located on an extension 16 from the side piece 13 of the frame or other support upon which the pawl 11 is pivoted. The free end of the spring is usually made to engage with a pin 17, extending from the inner face of the said pawl 11, as is also shown in Fig. 2. When the crank-wheel E is revolved in a forward direction, so as to produce a winding action on the part of the drums B and B, the spring 14 holds the pawl 11 out of engagement with the ratchet-teeth 10, as shown in Fig. 2, thus preventing any clicking sound during the operation of the engine; but the moment there is a tendency on the part of the engine to reversefor example, under the strain of the load carried thereby.the spring releases the pawl 11 to such an extent, as shown in Fig.1,that said pawl will engage with the ratchet-teeth 10 on the crank-wheel and will check the said reverse movement or effectually prevent the same.
I desire it to be understood that while the construction described is preferred a ratchetwheel maybe secured directly upon the driveshaft D of the engine, in which event the ratchet-teeth 10 may be omitted from the crank-wheel E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the drive-shaft of a hoisting-engine, and a crank-wheel secured to said drive-shaft and provided with peripheral ratchet-teeth inclined in a reverse direction to the direction of rotation of said crankwheel, of a pawl mounted upon a fixed support and arranged for engagement with the said ratchet-teeth, and a spring carried by said shaft and engaging with said pawl, said spring acting to hold the pawl out of engagement with the teeth of the crank-wheel while said wheel revolves in a forward direction, but releasing said pawl when the crank-wheel and drive-shaft commence to turn in a reverse direction, as specified.
JOSHUA BAGGALEY.
