To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MALCOLM C. DoUBLns,

-a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and .State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rain-Coats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in rain coats.

The object of my invention is to provide a rain coat made of paper, or other cheap material, which can be cheaply manufactured and sold to the trade'at a nominal sum and which can be folded into a very small package when not in use.

' Another object of my invention is to provide a rain coat of this character in which the cape forms a protection for the arms and the collar serves as a means for holding the coat in its proper shape and formsa finish to the upper end.

A still further object of myinvention is to providea. cheap, simple and eflective coat of this character having certain details of structure hereinafter more fully described.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents a-sheet of water-proof aper or other Water-proof material which orms the body portion of the rain coat. As shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, this sheet is of gradually tapering or flaring form, flaring toward the lower end, and is made of the desired length. The upper edge of the sheet is provided with two V-shaped slots 2 and 3, which communicate at their lower ends withthe two circular openings 4 and 5 which form the two arm holes.v The upper edge of the portion 6 between the slots 2 and 3 is curved at 7 to fit or form a portion of the neck of the coat and the portions 8 and v9 on the outside of the slots arealso curved but in a different are of a circle so as to form a round opening for the neck when the parts are assembled.

The portion 6 has secured thereto by water-proof cement the band 10 which is left free at the central portion and forms a loop 11, the purpose of which will be later described. The ends 12 and 13 of this band extend beyond the portion 6 and are adapted to extend across the upper edge of the portions 8 and 9 and are cemented thereto to hold them in the position shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The two portions 8 and 9 overlap the central portion 6 a slight distance and are cemented thereto, as indicated at 14, Fig. 7.

The cape 15 is provided at its upper edge with a central extension 16 which passes under the loop 11 and the loop is cemented thereto so as to support the cape. The cape thus forms a protection for the arms, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and no sleeves are provided.

In order that a finished article may be had and at the same time provide a collar, I use a' double piece of paper or other material like that used in the coat, as indicated at 17. The ends of the material of this collar are free, asindicated at 18 and 19. The portion 18 is cemented to the outer face of the band 10 and the portion 19 to the inner faces of the portions 8, 6 and 9 after the walls of the slots 2 and 3 have been overlapped, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and serves as means for more firmly binding the several parts together. The collar may be turned up to protect the neck, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, or may be turned down, as shown in Fig. 4.

. My improved coat, as heretofore stated, is preferably made of a water-proof paper and is adapted to be sold to the trade at such a price that it could be used once and thrown away. The coat is adapted to be folded in the position shown in Fig. 1 and then rolled up upon the cape and the cape folded over to form a wrap er for the mam body of the coat and thus orms a compact article. In order'to hold the folded article in the position shown, the cape is provided with two buttons 20 and 21 and secured to the button is a cord 22 which is adapted to pass around the cape, as shown in Fig. '3. The cord is also used for holding the two ends of the cape together when in use, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. 7

Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v

1. A coat composed of water-proof material comprising a body ortion made of a single sheet havmg roun openings and V- shaped cut-away portions communicating with the round openings forming the arm holes, a band secured to the upper end of the body portion and holding the parts between and on each side of the cut-away portion together, and having a free center portion, thereby forming a loop, a cape having several parts together.
