sige iricafibn of Letters may. PMQMQQIAQQ M, 7
Application filed January 8, 191 .7. Serial at. 141,124.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL T. S'rEnLE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Water-Bags, Bottles and the like, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My improved stopper for water bags, bottles and the like is particularly designed for use in connection with water bags but may be used in connection with bottles or vessels of any kind or class having a neck, and is more particularly deslgned for use in connection with vessels of the class specified in which the neck is provided with an interior thread.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in whlch the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a stopper in volving my invention;
Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Flg. 1;
Fig. 3 a transverse sectional v ew of the plug part of the stopper and showing it only partially formed;
Fig. 4 a bottom plan view of the handle part of the stopper;
Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 1 but show ing a modification;
Fig. 6 a section on the line 66 of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 a plan view of the blank from which the handle portion of the stopper shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is made.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4: inclusive, I provide a stopper comprising the usual thimble-shaped plug member a, and a handle member 7). The plug member a is thimble-shaped in form and the body portion thereof is provided, 1n the form of construction shown, with a thread a and said body portion is also provided at the top thereof with an enlarged annular flange or rim member a cut out at opposite points as shown at a to form two similar side rim members a The handle portion 6 is composed of heavy wire, or a light rod bent to form a handle member device and an annular base 6 the handle device o being uprigl'it or at right angles to the annular base, and in connecting the handle portion or member with the plug member a the rim members or parts a of the plug member are folded over the annular base 6 of the handle device, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and this forms an annular bead 0 at the top of the plug member beneath which is placed the usual packing gasket (Z.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, the plug member a and the gasket (Z are the same as in Figs. 1 and 2, except that the flange or rim member a is preferably made continuous and of less transverse dimension; but in this construction I provide a handle member 6 formed from a sheet metal blank 6 shown in Fig. 7, and comprising a central body portion 6 and two approximately semi-circular end portions e*, and in forming the handle member 6 from the blank 6 said blank is folded centrally of the body portion at e and the end portions 6 are folded at e, and this forms the upright handle device 6 and a circular base 6 as shown in Fig. 6, and the flange or rim member a of the plug a is folded over the circular base 6 and forms an annular bead a, as shown in Fig. 6.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 4; inclusive, the plug member a of the stopper is open at the top while in the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, the plug member a is closed at the top; and in both forms of construction the stopper with the exception of the packing gasket cl is composed of two parts only, and said parts are connected without the expensive process of riveting, soldering, welding, or the like heretofore practised, and I thus provide a stopper which is comparatively inexpensive, and which may be easily manipulated both for closing or opening a vessel of the class specified, and my improvement is not limited to the thread a on the plug member a, and other changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A stopper for vessels of the class specified, comprising a thimble-shaped plug member provided at the top thereof with a rim portion, and a handle member comas my invention 1' have signed my name in prising an upright end portion and a presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 10 horizontal base portion aI'OliId whiahhthe 5th day of January, 1917.
rim of t e lug mem er is f0 ed, sai an- 5 die membe being formed from a single MICHAEL STEELE piece of metal folded to form the handle Witnesses: portion and the base portion thereof. G. E. MULREANY,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing H. E. THoMPsoN.
