EYE CUP.
APPLIEATION FILED JUNE 1-, i915.
UNITED TATE PATENT @FFIQE.
LEO NUSSBAUM, OF MARION, INDIANA.
EYE-CUP.
Application filed June 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO NUSSBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Eye-Cups, of which the folowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in eye cups, and it is an object of my invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby it may be effectively applied and whereby the medicated material within the cup is prevented from escape during the period in which the cup is being applied.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved eye cup whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan of an eye cup constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the device as herein embodied; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the liquid chamber of the cup as herein embodied and parti-spherical in form and having opposite edges thereof bent inwardly, as at 2, whereby a substantially elliptical opening is afforded so that the device is adapted to fit against the lids of the eye and making a substantially watertight oint therewith; and it 'is to be observed that the rim of the cup is also made concave so that it flts the convex outline of the lids of the eye of the user. It is to be observed that the concave formation of the rim of the cup is obtained by having the flanges afforded by the inwardly bent portion 2 gradually increased in width from the opposite ends Specification of Letters Patent.

of the elliptical opening of the cup toward the longitudinal center thereof. It is also to be observed that the outer faces of the flanges 2 are rounded and disposed in continuity with the outer face of the chamber or cup 1 proper. It will also be observed that the inwardly pressed portions 2 result in an increased bearing surface and serve as an effective medium to prevent the discharge of the material within the chamber during the period the same is being applied in operative position. I wish to state at this time that the portions 2 form the essential feature of my invention and advantages hereinbefore set forth relative thereto have been fully substantiated in actual practice. 3 denotes a pedestal integrally formed with the cup and having its lower extremity provided with the base a so that the device may be supported in an upright position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an eye cup constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modiflcation without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
Iclaim:
An eye cup comprising a semi-spherical hollow body having opposite edge portions pressed inwardly to form a substantially elliptical opening and to afford flanges, said flanges being of gradually increased width from the ends of the elliptical opening toward the longitudinal center thereof whereby the rim of the opening is made concave, the outer surfaces of said flanges being rounded and arranged in continuity with the outer surface of the body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LEO NUSSBAUM.
Witnesses:
SIDNEY Lnwrs, WILLIAM H. WILEY.
