Application filed. August 16, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ADoLrH PETELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at corner of Rosedale street & Broadway, Freeport, county of Nassau, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Pumps, fully de-' scribed and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
The object of this invention is to furnish a construction for an air-pump by which the piston of the pump may be moved rapidly for a greater part of its stroke and moved more slowly and with concentrated force at the end of its stroke, and to effect such result with simple and inexpensive mechanism.
The construction includes a cylinder having pivots at one end fitted movably to par allel guides upon one end of a bed, a lever fulcrumed upon the opposite end of the bed and having arms projected in opposite directions, one arm beinglinked to the cylinder-pivots to move them forward in the guides, at the same time that the opposite arm of the lever presses the piston-rod into the cylinder. 1
The lever and piston-rod form two members of a toggle, so that the closing movement of the piston exerts a great compressing force upon the air, while the forward movement of the cylinder makes the initial movement of the piston much more rapid and less powerful. V
This construction is shown embodied in a foot-pump, in which the bed is adapted to rest upon the floor, and the lever provided with one long arm which is held normally raised by a spring into such a position that the foot can be readily applied to it to press it downward.
Repeated movements of the foot thus compress the air in the cylinder and discharge it from the outlet.
To centralize the strains upon the various parts, the lever and its connections are made duplex, the lever being formed of two plates pivoted to opposite sides of the lever bracket, and the shorter arms of its plates connected by duplex-links with the pivots upon the cylinder thus operating to move them both simultaneously in duplex guides upon the bed.
The arms of the lever are spaced apart sufficiently to pass downward at opposite sides of the cylinder, and the piston-rod 1s Specification of Letters Patent.

provided with a cross-head which is jointed to the duplex lever-arms, and when the lever 1s wholly depressed such joint stands in a line between the pivots of the cylinder and the fulcrum of the lever so as to straighten the toggle composed of these parts and compress the air with the greatest force.
The invention will be understood by reference to the annexed drawing, in which F gure 1 is a side elevation of the pump; Fig. 2 a plan of the piston cross-head; Fig. 3 an elevation of the latch for the same; Fig. 4 a side elevation of the pump with the lever depressed; Fig. 5 is a plan of the pump 1n the same position as in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a plan of the bed.

The guides a have slots a which extend lengthwise of the bed, and the cylinder cl has plvots 0 at the opposite sides of its base or rear end, which extend through the slots and are jointed to links The cylinder has the usual valve-box c, from which a hose d may be extended to deliver the air.
The power-lever is formed of side-plates each having a longer arm 5/ and a shorter arm 9 extended in opposite directions from the fulcrum 72, upon the bracket.
The cylinder is provided with a pistonrod 4 to operate an inner piston in the usual manner, and a cross-head j is fixed upon the end of the piston-rod and is jointed by pivots is at its ends to the opposite leverbars 9. The lever-arms are extended beyond the pivots 76 for a suflicient distance to carry a tread or foot-plate Z, thus giving the foot a leverage over the cross-head j.
The links f are jointed to the ends of the shorter lever-arms g, and the movement of the power-lever from its raised position shown in Fig. 1 to the depressed position shown in Fig. 4 operates simultaneously to draw the links and the cylindertoward the fulcrum h of the lever, while the arm 9 operates to push the piston-rod in the opposite direction.
The iirst part of the movement, as will be apparent from Fig. l, forces the piston very rapidly, but the last of the depressing movement brings the piston cross-head down into a direct line between the lever-fulcrum h and the cylinder pivots c, which straightens pressed when it the toggle for-med by these members, and presses the p1ston=rod the greatest force.

- It will be observed that the sidebars of the power-lever'are thin flat pieces which;
may be readily stamped from sheet-metal of suitable thickness, aswell ,as the links and the slotted guides at. Theseparts may thus be very cheaply constructedand, connected together with a minimum of labor,.thus p1rorducing a cheap construction which is aliso most effectivein compressing the air.
Having'thus-set forth the nature of the invention what is claimed herein is:
' 1. In an air-pump, the combination, with a bed-piece having parallel guides at one end and a lever-bracket upon the opposite end, of an air-cylinder with pivots movable in the parallel guides andhaving a piston rod, and a power-lever having a fulcrum upon said bracket connected at opposite i to operate a piston inthe cylinder, longer arm projected beyond sides of the fulcrumrespectively to the cylinder-pivots and the pistonTrod, to move the same simultaneously in opposite directions.
2. In an air-pump, the combination, with a bed-piece having parallel guides at one end and alever-bracket upontthe opposite end, of an air-cylinder with pivots movable in the parallel guides, a power-lever having a fulcrum upon said bracket with arms projected at opposite sides of the fulcrum, the
