FLAG-RETAINING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
Application filed May 28, 1917. Serial No. 171,367.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUsrIN FINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag- Retaining Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a flag retaining device and is adapted for use on flag poles.
One object of my invention is to provide means which will prevent a flag from wrapping around the pole and which will efficiently operate to hold the flag in proper position.
Another object of my invention is to provide means whereby the flag can be easily and conveniently slid to its position at the end of the pole and to hold the flag in said latter position.
A further object is to make my invention of simple construction so that it can be manufactured and sold at a reasonably low cost.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 shows a longitudinal view of a flag pole having my invention secured thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line Qr2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3 -3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 shows in elevation the manner in which my invention is secured to the flag pole when the latter is in its operative position to hold the flag.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section through a frame forming a part of my invention and showing how the flag can be secured thereon with snap buttons.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the flag pole having two grooved bands or rings 2 and 3 slidable longitudinally along the pole 1. A flag retaining frame 4, which is preferably made of wire, has a longitudinally extending portion 5 upon which one edge portion of the flag is attached by looping said portion thereon as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The opposite ends of the portion 5 are bent substantially at right angles and the free ends of said bent portion are agaln bent in the form of eyelets 6 and 7 around the respective bands 2 and 3 and within the grooves thereof, thus permitting the frame 4 to freely rotate around said bands 2 and 3.
A wire rod 8 has one end extending through the band 2 and slightly bent as shown at 9. A hump 10 is also formed in the wire rod 8 at the opposite surface of the band 2 so that a longitudinal movement of the wire rod 8 will slide the band 2 along the pole 1, and since the band 1 is in connection with the frame 4 and band 3, the entire frame and flag 11 will be moved parallel with the pole.
One end of the pole 1 is provided with a sleeve 12 which has a slot 13 into which can be projected the bent end 14: of the wire rod 8, thereby locking the rod to the pole to prevent accidental longitudinal movement of the frame 4: relatively to the pole l.
The frame 1 can be separated as shown at 15 to permit the flag to be removed therefrom and the parting between the wire can be closed by a sleeve 16 having a pin and slot connection or by other suitable means.
In operation, if the flag is blown, the frame A will swing with it and if the flag is blown entirely around the pole, the frame will also be dragged around the pole so as to prevent the flag from becoming wrapped thereon.
In Fig. 5, I have shown the flag secured to the frame 4: by means of snap buttons 17, and in this case it would not be necessary to separate the frame as shown at 15 in Fig. 1, since the frame could be made of a single piece of wire.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination of a flag pole, bands slidable thereon and spaced apart, a frame including portions embracing said bands and freely rotatable around them, said frame having a portion adapted to support the flag, a rod secured to one of said bands, means on said pole providing a slot, said rod having a portion designed to be projected into the slot to retain the rod to the pole, sub
stantially parallel to the pole for supporting a flag, and end portions providing eyelets embracing the grooves Within the bands, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a pole, grooved bands slidable thereon and spaced apart, a frame having a portion extending substantially parallel to the pole, and other porthe portions adjacent said parting together,
substantially as described.
