ALBERT E. HANSEN, OF ELKHART, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ELKHART BRASS MANU-- FACTURING- COMPANY, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
SHUT-OFF NOZZLE.
Application filed July 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. HANSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shut-Off Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in shut-ofi nozzles, it being especially adapted for fire departments and lumber yards, as the controlling nozzle for water or chemical liquid. This construction will stand more abuse in actual service for the reason that it has fewer parts, and is more compact than others.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a view in perspective,
Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal sectional views taken at right angles to each other,
Fig. 4 is a view of the plug, and
Figs. 5 and 6 show forms of the handle.
A represents the body of the nozzle. This is bored out transversely from one side with a slight taper as at l, and a plug B is turned and ground to fit the bore 1, and its stems 3, 3, are screw threaded as at 2, 2 in Fig. 4.
Felt washers G, G, preferably two at either end are fitted to the stems 3, 3 of the plug and to the recesses 4. therein and 5 in the body where they act as packing for the plug.
A cap H having a screw threaded periphery is screwed into the threaded recess 6. This cap H seals the plug in its place. Two adjusting nuts D, D, screw on the threads 2, 2 on the plug stems and by means of these nuts D, D the plug is adjusted to its proper place in the bore 1 giving the necessary adjustment for the tension under which the operator wishes to work the nozzle.
A further function of the two adjusting nuts D, D is to limit the possibility of knocking the plug B out of alinement, thus preventing the nozzle from leaking. The handle C is fastened to the plug by inserting its ends 7 7 into the holes 8, 8 in the stems of the plug, where the ends are held Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1917.
Serial No. 42,162.
by the set screws E, E, the inner ends of which set screws enter the recesses 9, 9 in the ends 7, 7 of the handle.
The handle C has a double function, as it shuts off or opens the nozzle on a movement of 90 degrees by the lug 10 on the handle striking the body A at either extreme movement as illustrated by full and dotted lines in Fig. 3, which shows nozzle open and closed respectively.
The foregoing action takes place without any other mechanical contrivance, and the handle may also be used to carry the nozzle by.
The letter F is a tip, one end of which is screw threaded as at 11, to screw on to threads 12 of the body, and at this point of the body a recess 18 is formed in which a rubber washer I is seated, the rim of the recess preventing the washer from swelling when the tip is screwed on.
What I claim is:
1. The combination of a hollow body portion transversely bored, a plug ground and fitted to the transverse bore, stems projecting from opposite ends of the plug, through the body portion, said stems having holes there in, a handle the ends of which are inserted in the holes in the plug stems, set screws in the stems for holding the ends of the handle removably therein, a cap screwed into a threaded recess in the side of the body to hold the plug in place, packing washers inserted around the stems of the plug between the ends of the latter one in an annular recess in the wall of the body the other in annular recess in the face of the plug, and adjusting nuts screwed on threads on the stems of the plug said nuts adapted to be received in recesses in the outer surfaces of the body and the cap.
2. The combination of a hollow body portion transversely bored, a plug ground and fitted to the transverse bore, stems projecting from opposite ends of the plug, through the body portion, said stems having holes therein, a handle the ends of which are inserted in the holes in the plug stems, set
2 ima e? screws in the stems for holding the ends of the handle removably therein, a cap screwed into a threaded recess in the side of the body to hold the plug in place, packing washers inserted around the stems of the plug between the ends of the latter, one in an annular recess in the Wall of the body,
the other in an annular recess in the fade of the plug, and adjusting nuts screwed 0n threads on the stems of the plug against the 10 outer surfaces of the body and the cap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALBERT E. HANSEN.
