SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,252, dated September 18, 1900.

To all whom it Tnay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. FoRD,of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Right and Left Basin-Cock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide a basin-cock that may be used either as a righthand cock or a left-hand cock. plified in the structure hereinafter described, it is defined in the appended claims, and its advantages are obvious to persons skilled in the art to which it relates.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of a cock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the cock. Fig. 3 is a centralvertical section through the novel portion of the device. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a modified form of the cock. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through a fragment of the modified form.
In constructing a cock in accordance with my idea a vertical body is made in any desirable manner except for the peculiarities hereinafter described, and 'it is provided with a suitable valve and valve-stem. On the upper end of the valve-body a nozzle is mounted in communication with the bore of the body and in a manner to permit horizontal swing, and an adjustable bearing is connected with the body in position to grip the nozzle and hold it in any desired position with relation to the valve-stem.
The details of construction may be as follows, namely: The upper portion of the body 1 is reduced to form the stem 2. The stem is exteriorly threaded, as shown at 3, and it. is bored lengthwise and laterally to permit passage of water. The nozzle 10 fits over the smooth portion of the stem 2, with its lower surface resting against the shoulder formed by the reduction of the body, and a nut 6 is screwed onto the threaded portion of the stem and into contact with the upper surface of the nozzle with a sufficient firmness to hold the nozzle from turning on the stem and prevent leakage. Whenever it is desired to turn the nozzle to change the character of the cook, the nut is first loosened and then retightened after the nozzle is shifted to the desired position. The invention is shown in a modified form in Figs. 4 and 5, where the nozzle is clamped between two parts of the body of the cook, the upper part acting as the mechanical equivalent of the nut 6. In this case a hollow threaded stem 1 is extended upward from the lower portion 1 of the body, the annular portion 9 of the nozzle is fitted around the stem, and the upper portion of'the body is screwed onto the stem and against the nozzle. 2, the nozzle 10 is the same as 10, and the part 1 of the body acts on the stem and on the nozzle precisely the same as does nut 6.
What I claim is- I 1. In a right and left basin-cock, a body comprising parts adjustable lengthwise with relation to each other, such parts being conjoined by means of a reduced hollow cylinder forming part of the body, and a nozzle'swingable on the cylinder in communication with the interior thereof, whereby the nozzle may be swung to any desired position and clamped there, substantially as set forth.
2. In a right and left basin-cock, a hollow cylindrical stem reduced with relation to the body and forming part thereof a nozzle encircling the stem and communicating with the interior thereof, and an adjustable bearing on the stem adapted to be forced against the nozzle, substantially as set forth.
3. In a basin-cock, a hollow exteriorly- The stem 1 is virtually the same as stem A threaded stem on the body of the cock communicating with the body and having an out let-opening, a nozzle encircling the stem, and a nut on the stem adapted to bear against the nozzle.
4. In a basin-cock, the body 1, the reduced stem 2 bored and threaded, the recess 4 in the shoulder of the stem, the gasket 5 in recess 4, the nozzle 10 encircling the stem and having the annular bearings 11, the nut 6 having IO the recess 7, and the gasket Sin recess 7, substantially as described.
