To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SALADEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bedford, in the county of Lawrence and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Clothes-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful. improvements in a. folding clothes rack and one'of its objects is the provision of a device of this character which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

Another object of this invention is to provide a standard, having a plurality of arms hinged to the sides thereof which may be swung to a horizontal position for supporting clothing and which are capable of being swung to vertical position in the standard to form a compact device.

A further object of this invention is to provide strips upon the standard at points adjacent the hinged ends of the arms for supporting said arms in a horizontal position.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a folding clothes rack, constructed in accordance with my invention,

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a plate having downwardly and outwardly converging walls 2, in which are secured a plurality of legs L forming a suitable pedestal. The plate 1 is provided with apertures to readily receive the bolt 3. j

A substantially rectangular standard 5 has its lower end closed by a bottom wall. 6 which is provided with an aperture to receive the bolt 3. A suitable disk 7 is mounted on the bolt 3 and countersunk in the plate 6 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 and bears upon the plate 2 which secures the legs 1 together to form a bearing for the stand ard 5 to rotate upon. Each side of the standard is provided with a plurality of elongated openings 8 for receiving a plurality of arms 9. The lower ends of the arms 9 being hinged to the standard 5 by means of bolts 10 for hingedly securing the arms 9 to the standard 5, whereby said arms may be swung outwardly to a horizontal position as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Suitable knobs 10' are secured to the upper outer faces of the arms 9, whereby said arms may be readily pulled from within the openings 8 and swung to a horizontal position when desired. A substantially rectangular frame or strip 11 is secured to the standard 5 at points adjacent the hinged ends of the arms 9 for supporting said arms in a horizontal position. The outer faces of the arms rest upon the upperfaces of the frames 11 when the arms are in a horizontal position. Secured to the inner faces of the arms 9 are a plurality of members 12 which have their ends bent to form hooks 13. The members 12 are secured to the arms 9 by means of bolts 14:, whereby the hooks may be turned upon the arms 9 to extend transversely thereof when the arms are in a horizontal position so that clothing and other articles may be suspended to the arms.

One side of the standard 5 is provided with a plurality of openings 15 to receive suitable sliding drawers 16, whereby small articles may be stored away within the standard 5.

In operation, when desiring to suspend clothing for drying and other purposes, the arms 9 are swung outwardly to a horizontal position until they rest upon the frames 11, the members 12 are then turned transversely of the arms 9, whereby clothing and other articles may be attached to the arms. The standard 5 being rotatably secured to the base, obviates the necessity of a person moving from place to place to reach the various arms upon the standard 5, as said standard 5 may be readily turned upon the base to bring the arms on the various sides of the standard 5 adjacent the person or operator of the device. When .not desiring to employ the device further, the arms 9 may be swung upwaii'dly to a substantially vertical position within the openings 8 of the standard 5 to form a compact article. Before folding the arms 9, the members 12 are turned upon the bolts 14- until they extend parallel with the arms so that said arms may readily fold within the standard 5.

Referring to my modified form of invention, it consists of a standard 17 having elongated openings 18 upon the front and sides thereof. Arms 20 have their lower ends hinged within the lower ends of the openings 18 by pins 21, whereby said arms are capable to be swung to a horizontal position, being supported in said position by the frame 22 which is secured to the standard 17 at a point adjacent the hinged ends of the arms 20, the arms 20 having suitable knobs 23 secured to their upper outer ends, whereby said arms may be readily pulled from within the openings 18 and swung to a horizontal position. A base 24 is secured to the rear face of the standard 17 and projects to points beyond each end thereof and each end of the base 24 is provided with openings 25 to receive screws or other fastening means for securing the base to a wall or other object.

While I have shown. and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A clothes folding rack comprising a plate having a central aperture, downwardly and outwardly converging side walls formed upon the plate, a plurality of legs secured to the inner faces of the side walls for forming a pedestal, a bolt rotatably mounted in the aperture of the plate, a vertical standard having an aperture in its lower end to rotatably receive said bolt, a disk secured to said bolt and countersunk in the lower end of the standard and bearing upon the plate to rotatably support the standard upon the pedestal, said standard having a plurality of elongated openings, arms hinged at the lower ends of the openings and normally closing said openings, and handles secured to the outer free ends of the arms for swinging said arms into horizontal position for supporting articles.

A folding clothes rack comprising a pedestal, a substantially rectangular vertical standard rotatably mounted upon said pedestal and having vertically disposed elongated slots in the faces thereof, a plurality of arms pivoted at the lower end of the slot of the standard and adapted to normally close the slots, handles secured to the outer faces of the free ends of the arms for swinging said arms into horizontal position, rectangular straps secured to the standard at the pivoted. ends of said arms for supporting said arms in a horizontal position, and a plurality of hooks pivoted to the inner faces of the arms and adapted to extend parallel with the arms when inclosed within the standards and which may be swung transversely of the arms to support articles thereon when said arms are in a horizontal position. i
