` ineens-r..
To all 'whom 'it may concern.:
it known that l', @LA A.. ANnEBsoN,' a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand ftapids, in the county .of'Kcnt and State of Michigan, have "invented certain new and nsefulflrnprovements in Benchlllochs, ofWl'illb/the following is a specication.
"My invention relates to improvements in bench blocks for use on cabinet benches, carpenters benches, etc., and its Objectis to de a cheaply constructed bench blockv .l with which the danger of dulling ning' a plane bit, should it come in contact with the surface of the block when planing lumber, is practically eliminated.
l attain this object by the construction and assembling of metals shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the 'completed block; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line of Fig. l showing1 the layers of metal and the manner of assembling them to in'u ill a perfectly safe and seourenianner of uniting the two metals in the-construction of the block; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the saine on the line l l of F 1;and' Fi f. is a plan of the base, or supporting f of the bloei; to which thssofter metal tired. Sin lar numerals refer to similar parte #hout the several views shown in the dran lia-'the construction of this block l make a base or snnnorting element '2, of cast iron, east stce., V- other suitable metal of Sullil' to safely support the softer ,le the coatingl of soft metal 1 ...j be applied to any form ofmetal bench inoclc, for convenience l have applied it to the bench blo-cli patented tof/nie April 6, i916, by Letters PatenthT l, 134,937, the only chanpge in the block shown in said patent being in the forming of the upper surface thereof. ln the former patent this was shown as a plain cast iron block. ln this case the edges of the block are made flaring and the' eenter'of the upper surface is remoyed 'to forni the dovetailcd rim or border to 5. l, also, drill, or form flaring holes, 3, for the purpose of strengthening the center of the softer metal.
Specification ofLetters Eatent. Application lled Julie 26, 1916. Serial No. 105,074.
retenant ling, a reir.
When the clore has been properly prepared it is placed in a properly formed mold, vas 7, as indicated in F ig. l, and the mold, around the core, is filled with some soft metal, preferably lead, solder or very soft Babbitt metal, previously melted and properly poured into the mold.
It will be readily understood that with the softer metal properly prepared and poured into the mold, over and around the core or base 2, and conformingr closely to the dovetailed edges, and the flaring holes 3 of the core, as at 5 and 6, the softer metal becomes practically coherent with the harder metal, especially if the harder metal has been properly prepared and a flux used that will cause the softer metal, in its melted state, to adhere to the surface of the harder metal, as by soldering. The last mentioned condition is very desirable in the construction of these blocks, though it is not absolutely necessary.
It is not material where the holes 3, 3, in the base or core 2, are located, as they are used only to strengthen the soft metal cap l, though l prefer to have them near the front edge of the block, as indicated in Figs. 2 and d, as by this means they act more directly to strengthen 'the soft metal at the edge upon which the greatest strain is exercised. However, I frequently place these holes in practically the position shown in F ig. 3, especially if making the blocks so narrow, in cross section, as to preclude the possibility' of locating them forward of the standard l, as in Figs. 2 and Las hereinbefore suggested.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is
ln a bench block, a broad metal base forming a. thin web having downwardly and outwardly Haring holes therethrough, a dove- 'tailed border integral with and extending upward vfrom the base, a Asupporting,r stem integral with and extending downward from the base, and a soft metal covering around, within and upward from the base and the dovetailed border and through the openings in the base.l Signed at Grand Rapids, Michigan, June es, 191e.
@LA A.. ANDERSON.
