To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, THOMAS IRWIN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Brantford, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends the provision of a toy wherein use is made of a toy pistol for exploding paper caps, and a movable object or figure mounted in a casing upon I the barrel of a pistol, the invention residing in the manner. of connecting the object or figure with the trigger of the pistol, so that as the trigger is cooked the object or figure is brought to view above the casing, and caused to disappear within the casing when the pistol is fired.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the inven tion residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the toy showing the parts in the position occupied when the pistol is fired.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the trigger is cooked.

Referring more particularly to the drawing in detail 10 and 11 indicate two members which are to be riveted or otherwise secured together as at 12, and having a configuration similar to that of a pistol, the members being constructed from any suitable material. Rising from the upper edge of the pistol is a socket 13 adapted to receive an explosive such as a paper cap or the like, which is exploded by the hammer 1 1 of a trigger 15. As shown the trigger is positioned between the respective members 10 and 11 having its extremity opposite the hammer 14 disposed in the usual position to be engaged by the finger of the user. The trigger is of course pivoted as at 16 to be operated in the usual well known manner.

A casing 17 is adapted to be arranged at the forward extremity of the barrel of the Specification of Letters Patent.

pistol, and while this casing may be separate from the barrel and secured thereto in any suitable manner, it is preferably desired to have each of the members 10 and 11 respectively formed with a semicylindrical portion 18, and which portions unitedly dofine the casing 17, when the members 10 and 11 are operatively associated. The portions 18 are secured together preferably by means of a rivet 19, while the casing is closed at its forward end as at 20. While it has been stated that the casing 17 is of cylindrical contour, it may be of any suitable design and configuration, and adds materially to the general appearance of the toy. J ournaled within the casing is a transverse rod 21 upon which is fixed for movement therewith a substantially rectangular plate or member 22. The plate 22 constitutes a support for a movable object or figure 23 which is adapted to be brought to view above the casing when the trigger is cooked, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and caused to disappear when the pistol is fired, by being moved wholly within the casing through the instrumentality of means to be presently described.

Arranged within'the barrel of the pistol is a sectional rod, the sections being indicated at 24 and 25, respectively, and which sections are suitably connected by means of a spring 26. The section 24 projects beyond the barrel of; the pistol into the casing 17 and terminates to provide an elongated slot 27 which receives the crank portion 28 of the rod 21. By reason of the fact that the rod 21 constitutes a support for the plate 22, it is manifest that the section 24 of the operatingrod is connected in the manner above described with the plate 22. The section 25 of this rod is suitably connected with the trigger 15 so that as the trigger is cocked the plate 19 is moved in the proper direction to bring the object or figure 23 to view above the casing. The end wall of the slot 29 in the top of the casing provides an abutment or stop for the plate 22 to limittheadjustment of this member to the position occupied when the triggerris cocked During this movement of the trigger the spring 26 is tensioned to assist in holding the parts in their proper position, this being also accomplished by means of the spring 30 having a notched extremity 31 which receives a lug 32 on the trigger when the latter is cooked, which arrangement of parts is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.

Also positioned within the barrel of the pistol is a rod 33 having its forward'extremity projecting beyond the barrel and 'connect ed to the plate 22 in any suitable manner and at a point above the connection between this member and the section 24 of the above mentioned rod, while the opposite end of the rod 33 is provided with an enlargement 34L. This rod is also slidably mounted through a suitable guide 35. The trigger 15 is provided with a flattened portion 36 adapted to be brought into contacting engagement with the enlargement 34 of the rod 33 when the pistol is fired, thereby moving the rod 33 in the proper direction to rock the plate or member 22 for the purpose of lowering the object or figure 23 within the casing out of view. When the trigger is pulled the lug 32 is moved out of the notch 31 of the sprlng 30 and as the lug 32 passes beyond center the spring 30 exerts a clownward pressure to assist in moving the trigger forwardly in the firing of the pistol. The spring 26 as above stated is tensioned when the trigger is cooked, and as the trigger is moved forwardly the spring 26 initially contracts prior to any movement of the respective rods, and thereby permitting the sections 24 and 25 of the rod including the spring 26 to move freely as a unit in a forward direction, which movement is permitted by means of a slot 27 as will be readily understood. The contraction of'the spring 26 takes place immediately before the flattened portion 36 of the trigger is brought into engagement with the enlargement 3A of the rod 33, so that the rod 33 may be easy to manipulate in the manner above described andfor the purposeof swinging'the plate 22 together with its object 23 within the casing 17. This operation takes place almost simultaneously with the hammer l4: entering the socket l3 exploding the cap, thus resembling shooting of the object or figure 23.

A toy of this character will afford considerable amusement for young folks, and being simple in construction can be manufactured and sold at a small cost.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention to which I do not limit myself, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
