TOY.
APPLICATION 211,30 MAR. 23. 1905.
UN ITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH D. WASHINGTON, OF PLTTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
' TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed March 23, 1905. Serial No. 251,545
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention has relation to toys, and has for its object the provision of a novel toy in the form of a miniature cannon which can be operated at will so as to emit a puff of smoke and simulate the discharge of a real cannon in this particular, thereby creating the im-"' pression to the onlookers that a cannon has been discharged.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth.
I have illustrated my improvements in the accompanying drawing, wherein the single figure shows a-miniatu're cannon in side elevation and shows, partly in section, the appliance by means of which the cannon is caused to emit a puff of smoke.
The cannon 1, which may be of any desired. .size, hasa bore 2, that extends through the cannon from end to end, and the cannon is mounted on a carriage 3, which is provided with wheels 4:, these parts being made in the form of and resembling the. like parts of'a real cannon. To the rear of the cannon is attached a flexible tube 5, this tube communicating with the bore 2 of the cannon and being provided at any convenient point with a valve-casing 6, in which is arranged a flap-valve 7. The tube'5 is connected to a three-armed union 8, and to one of the arms of the union is connected-a flexible tube 9, which at its other end isconnected to a flexible bulb 10. The other arm of the union is connected to a flexible tube 11, that has intermediate of its ends a valve-casing 12, in which is arrangeda flap-valve 13, and the tube 11 is connected with a receptacle 12, which is adapted to receive a suitable fuel, such as paper, which when ignited'will generate a considerable Volume of smoke.
The parts being constructed in the abovedescribed manner operate as follows: A quantity of fuel, such as paper or shavings, is
placed in the receptacle '12 and ignited. The bulb 10 is then squeezed and collapsed, and
being allowed to expand the smoke from the fuel in the receptacle 12' will be sucked into the bulb, the valve 13 being opened by the suction created by allowing the bulb to eX- pand while the valve 7 is closed. The bulb 1O isthen compressed, and the smoke which has been drawn into the same will be forced through tube 5 and through the bore 2 of the cannon and out at the mouth of the same, the valve 7 during this operation opening while the valve 13 remains closed. This operation of the device will give the appearance of a cannon having been fired. i It will be noted thatvarious changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is a w A toy comprising a toy cannon embodying a barrel having a bore extending from end to end, and a wheel-supporting carriage for the barrel, a flexible tube communicating with the rear end of the bore in said barrel, a flap-valve arranged within said tube and opening in the direction of the discharge of the tube, a union having three ports, with one of which. the other end of saidflexible tube communicates, two flexible tubes communicating at one end with the other two of said ports, a flap-valve in one of said openings toward the union, a receptacle to which the other end of said tube is connected, and with which it communicates,
the other of said two tubes connected to the JOSEPH D. WASHINGTON.
